California Gun Free School Zone Act loophole !!

We can only hope they got our message on this.
Just found this online ......

AB1934 is still alive but the proponents did not seem to be aware that there is a gaping loophole in the bill. The 1995 California Gun Free School Zone Act which created 1,000 foot "gun free" zones around school boundaries was rolled into the bill with its exemptions intact. That means that the one place you can be absolutely certain it is legal to Openly Carry a handgun is at a business (e.g., Starbucks), residence or private property located within 1,000 feet of a K-12 public or private school.

In other words, AB1934 creates an oasis of Open Carry around every school. I'm not sure that is what the proponents had intended.

The ban only applies to handguns so it will still be legal to Open Carry rifles and shotguns everywhere it was before the bill became law, if it becomes law.

STOP PRESS: Just saw AB1934 Lori Saldana has to place the call on Yes votes 18 to Noes 17 @1445 8/30/2010

As far as I know, this is only true if you can obtain a written exemption from a school superintendent which nobody (to my knowledge) has been able to do thus far.

ETA: 1810 is currently at 17 for, 18 against.

AB1934 - Calderdon votes aye - 19 yes, 17 no / AB1810 18 - 18 both back on call

it can still go later tonight or tomorrow. They are not giving up, but without a vote change they don't have the votes.

Currently stands at 20 ayes, 16 noes.

Senator Ducheny changed her vote form No to Aye.

Negrete Mcleod has not voted. Oropeza and Wiggins are still absent. They need one vote to pass.

Absentees were called again a moment ago- AB1934 failed, but is up for reconsideration....

1934 just failed, reconsideration was granted.

I think that means it still hasn't failed. Sigh.

The Democrats are now, at this moment, trying to twist Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod to change her vote from "No" to "Aye" on AB 1934. Please call her office and very respectfully ask her to maintain her "No" vote on AB 1934. Her phone number is (916) 651-4032. Her fax is (916) 445-0128. We need all hands on deck for this one! If McLeod changes her vote, AB 1934 will pass!

I would add that in addition to phoning, faxing and emailing Ducheny, Negrete McLeod, and Florez- we can multiply our effort by CROSS POSTING this to other California freedom loving sites... Like your local Tea party movement...
