OC'ing into private homes?

One of my businesses takes me into a lot of private homes and businesses while buying inventory, both in and out of state. I also occasionally buy things off of Craigslist here in town and that can create some challenges.

I often ask the question, "Should I open carry into this home or leave it in the rig?" I'm usually carrying cash for a purchase but some people can lget pretty uneasy if they see a gun and may refuse to deal with me altogether. I've done this for decades without carrying so am challenged at times about whether to OC.

So I decided to buy a scooter for playing around town on the short trips and found one that was virtually brand new at a great price. Almost a 'too good to be true' price. I quizzed the seller a bit but he seemed legit and I've done enough of it to know the difference. All communications were by email or text.

I asked my other half to go along to be an extra gun because this guy told me he lived in Naked City just behind the Strat. Not a good neighborhood. I wasn't sure if I should OC into his home but decided if nothing else I'd have my lady carry her .380 holstered in her hand, in a non-obvious manner.

So I arrived at the location and strapped on. It was a really dicey area. I called and texted the guy and asked him to come out; he didn't answer my call but eventually texted back. At the same time I noticed a very suspicious 'minority' walking by on a neighboring street while on his phone and looking our way. The seller was still nowhere to be seen. Soon I was observing ANOTHER suspicious looking 'minority' approaching from the rear, also on his phone. It was feeling like a total setup but I also felt we had a huge ace in the hole. We were both waiting outside the van for the seller to come out from the apartments but he never showed or responded to my repeated calls and texts.

As the second guy got closer I told my lady to get in the van and off we went. We went a half block away and flipped a U so we could observe the apartment. I told my lady that it had to be a Craigslist robbery setup and the whole thing was a scam. We were glad to be armed.

Suddenly, several minutes later, I see another 'young minority' wheeling this brand new bright red scooter out from the apartments and onto the sidewalk! He parked it right in front of what looked like a couple of other gang-bang types who were in front of their duplex next door, working on their cars. We pulled the van around in front of the seller and both of us popped out while carrying in full view, our heads on swivels.

The sweet young guy selling the bike hadn't even noticed that we were carrying. I was going to test ride the scooter and knew that he'd see my holstered weapon which was slightly behind me so I let him know that she and I were both 2A supporters and carried regularly, a couple of the 'good guys'. He was surprised/shocked but very supportive so we filled him in on his rights. He was new to town and didn't realize how bad the neighborhood was when he rented his apartment before actually seeing it or moving here. He later told me that my calls and texts were going to his girlfriend's phone and then she was passing the messages on to him, causing the delays. OMG.

We told him we felt like we were being set up and he joked that we were now going to rob HIM and steal his scooter LOL. We brought him up to speed on the Craigslist scams and suggested that he be a bit more cautious.

The two gang-bang types who were only feet away clearly saw our weapons and ended up retreating into their homes rather than continuing to work on their vehicles. I think they assumed that we were both LEO's. It got really quiet around there really quickly LOL.

We bought the bike at a killer price and had a title in hand. It was a great deal but without being able to carry I never would have stopped on that street. The other two on the phones continued to walk around and we alerted the seller to them and he said they were roaming around like that all the time.

In this case having the visibility of OC was a definite plus. We may have also converted a super-good kid into carrying as well. I think he was Jamaican or Puerto Rican, I can't remember; around 21 years old. It was also nice having my other half as a backup.

I got into a pretty heated discussion when a friend, who "had just completed a Nevada CCW course" told me that you can't carry a firearm into a bar, in Nevada, let alone drink. I informed him he was wrong on both counts. I did provide the NRS and he dropped it. He's never questioned or doubted me since.

Sometimes people from out of state try to bring their laws or sense of what the laws "should be" into our state. Research and know the facts.
I was told the same thing when I took my CCW class in Carson about ten years ago. That's why I asked. Now I know better.
Thanks again everyone

When I took my CCW class at the gun store by Bob Eaton, who most definitely teaches what he WISHES was the law and NOT what actually is the law, it got me so upset I was shaking. I was torn between just being quiet and going through the motions or speak up. At lunch break I could take it no more. I kinda got into it with Bob Eaton on the break asking him why he was misquoting the law. In short, he does it because he can and continues to get away with it. Same reason that Metro still has the "no guns" sign on their front doors. Blatant disregard for the law. Might is right.

Anyhow, I got my stupid ccw cert - jumped through their hoops and paid for my right. And I don't know if it was planned or if I upset Eaton, but he didn't come back from the break. Instead his wife did the last half of the class. He never said he wasn't coming back when we left for the break. I kinda wonder if I upset him. Good! Nothing more disgusting than hypocrisy.

Point: People lie. Trust no one and do your own homework because most everyone has their own agenda...and it's usually not in your best interest.

Hmmm, that doesn't seem legal unless she is also certified by the state to do it, and signed the papers, too, especially if he wasn't even in the room.

She is. She did. Funny you mention that too as I JUST ran across those papers today for no good reason - just ran across them filing something. Strange....

So, his CCW permit isn't any good? He's been practicing Constitutional carry all this time without even realizing it. lol

As updated, she was good to sign it, and did. But it wouldn't invalidate his permit, once issued by the county. If wrongly done, the recourse would be between the county and the instructor. Worst case, the permit could be revoked, but it would be valid while issued.

If you were that scared of the neighborhood then you should have just not went in the first place. A lot of (minorities) live behind the Stratosphere LOL! No offense but some people are a little too paranoid.

That neighborhood has been one of the highest crime areas in Las Vegas for decades. Obviously there is times we find the need to be in a less desirable area. With basic knowledge of the area and the need to be there is it paranoid, or being aware of your surroundings?

NW LV Walmart: Saw a fellow oc'er. Didn't say anything to him. Not my cup of tea - He had a black muscle shirt (no muscles tho). In his 50s or more. Long braided gray ponytail. Harley type beanie cap. But cool to see another oc'er.
And another guy came up to me and said "I like your shirt" which says on the back "This is my idea of group therapy" showing a shooting target. Then he handed me a card saying he owns a gun shop. That was cool. I'm sure he saw my sidearm.

Walmart is a great place to oc. There are often so many "odd" people there that blending in is a breeze. lol

One of the problems with amping up our color code of awareness due to geographical location is that we will tend to deescalate it for the same reason. It is a good exercise to put a level of priority on the facts your brain utilized to go from say code yellow to code red. reassessing them often, I try to diminish the non human factors such as geographic location, Concentrating more emphasis on human actions and behaviors. It is a learning curve, and needs constant tuning.

It's easier to count the 'normals.' I had a good talk with a guy about OC/CC and his experience shooting someone in Walmart the other day. Really nice guy, let him cut in front of me too.

Open carried at my knee Dr. had my full size 40 and belt buckle 22lr. Had to go to skivvies, put the pants with hardware on the examination table next to me. Third time at this Dr. not one word.
Had lunch at FireHouse subs no issues. Went to Sunrise hospital secured the 40 in the vehicle and just had the belt buckle 22 in the open. Walked in with a couple of security guards they did not notice. Getting off the elevator on my mom’s floor one of the nurses has a very concern look on her face as she noticed the buckle I kept walking pull the shirt up and over it afterwards. No issues.

??? Don't leave us hanging.

Someone cut him off in line on Black Friday once. Lol

He said he was in Texas on business and heard someone breaking into his car in the middle of the night. He goes to investigate and the car burglar comes at him with a screwdriver. He told the burglar to stop or he would regret it. Burglar keeps coming at him with the screwdriver, so he draws his gun and shoots him. In court the burglar is asked "Why didn't you stop?" "Because I didn't know he had a gun."

We had a nice discussion on concealed vs. open carry.

"Stop or I will shoot" would be better for me; it's short and right to the point. The Freeze line and what follows is too long for me. First, I'd have to remember all those words to say and I have a bad memory. Last, by the time I finished saying all those lines I'd already have a screw driver lodged in my chest. lol.

The last time I had to draw my weapon I used the same line. The "incident" is always a high speed drill and it is not the time to figure out how to address the situation. Training and more training until it is a wrote memory.
I yell my commands loudly and repeat them until I achieve compliance. "Stop, Stop, or I WILL shoot!" emphasis on the will, and repeated until complied with. "Face away from me, face away from me" morphs into either "get on the ground" or "walk away now!" All commands repeated until BG complies.
Keep it simple, they are BGs after all and they have demonstrated their lack of smarts already by confronting you. No slack, hit them hard.

Tossing in a few "Stop Resisting" commands is optional.

I use the same 7 word command in my training that all bad guys understand 100% of the time, "Go ahead, and make my day, PUNK". ;) You can always mix them up like, "I know what your thinking, did he fire 16 or 17 shots, well in all this excitement I loss count myself, so what you got to ask yourself is, Do you feel lucky, well do ya Punk".:D
