OCed at Hungry Howies in Detroit this afternoon, no problems no issues. Staff was very polite and professional.
A few weeks ago I was OCing at Mongolian Chinese Buffet in Warren and I was questioned by this middle age black woman dining with her husband and children. Now mind you I had been inside the establishment a good 45 minutes and had gotten up to go to the buffet about three or four times. This goes to show you how much the average person pays attention to their surroundings. Her three children saw me as well as her husband. And just as I was finishing my final plate I heard her blurt out loudly “Who got guns!?” as she craned her neck in my direction; while everyone else at her table silently looked at me with guilty eyes for heaping what they thought was embarrassment upon me. Mind you this entire time, the children had been or were cool as cucumbers, very nonchalant as we navigated around each other while getting our food at the buffet and they didn’t bat an eye. Now suddenly mama bear wanted to make a scene. I smiled and replied “Yes, it me. But I‘m sitting down so you cannot see.” After finishing my plate and as I was about to rise to go pay my bill at the register, I announced to her, “Now you can look.” I rose and turned toward the register and she cried out “Goodness, who are you? Are you a cop or something? Smiling, I replied, “No ma’am I’m just a private citizen who is open carrying, that‘s all.” She rose from her table and followed behind me. Eyeing me closely and in an accusatory tone said “No you’re not! Is that a bulletproof vest!?” I turned to her and replied, “Yes it is.” You are a cop! she said triumphantly as if she were a winner on some TV game show. Doing a poor job of holding in my laughter at this point I replied, “No, I am not.” Curiosity and concern then crept into her face and voice as she asked, “So, is someone after you? Snickering and shaking my head, I replied “No.” She then asks “Are you wanted or something?” Again, I replied “No. Ma’am, I’m a security officer.” That answer finally seemed to satisfy her. The Asian manager then interjected and echoed what I had just told the woman which was that I’m a security officer, he then handed me my change and thanked me for my patronage and I walked out the door.
This lady showed me something though, and that is how insular the gun community is about its ownership of firearms which thereby makes it easy for the mainstream media to portray us law-abiding gun owners as caricatures. This woman could only envision me as either a LEO or a felon, she wrestled with the idea that the average law-abiding citizen could keep and bear arms in public, in such shameless fashion, in this day and age. It was then that I was reminded I was in the deep end of the pool, not because I owned numerous firearms, but because I was among the least bashful about the fact that I am a gun owner. And it was then that I truly understood what Rick Ector meant when he said to me “You open carry guys are the vanguard, the very tip of the spear in terms of gun ownership.” We bring the subject of gun ownership out of the closet.
