How long does it take to get a pistol permit in CT

Right. They only send out an FBI Background check that runs a NICS check on you using Federal Databases, the State uses any in State records for theirs, and they check your prints. The town keeps the actual 4 page record, because you are filing as a gun owner in your town, the state just recognizes that, and only that, and allows in state carrying. My town didn't need references, but did require my employment history, which legally they technically can't ask for either, but they do. Still it's a game of whenever they sent out the request State/Federal BG check and for prints to be read, and really it's the State BG check that takes the longest.

So does the FBI check get sent back separately from the State check? Maybe that is why some people have been able to get their permit approved quickly because if the FBI check is done that would pick up any CT issues, I mean I guess there could be some motor vehicle records that aren’t in the FBI check and possibly some mental health records but it would seem that 99% of what the PD needs is in the federal check which is a fingerprint check and is supposed to positively identify any criminals.

The FBI Background check is the NICs Background check. The federal government, despite its flaws at times, is pretty organized lol The NICs system is actually what an FFL carrier or gun dealer is supposed to use when they run a background check on someone buying a gun. It's instant. Absolutely quick. It's an immediate response. The state check is the hold up, and tbh it shouldn't take as long as it is. Something is up, and has been for a while.

I just want to know what month SPBI is in so we can get a clearer understanding here... It sucks that they won't tell anymore information.

I could be wrong but I think the FBI check that is done for the pistol permit is more thorough than the NICS check. The NICS check only tells if someone is prohibited from firearm possession. I don’t believe it includes arrests and misdemeanors. The fingerprint FBI check includes all arrest records not just disqualifying arrests. With that said the fingerprint FBI check has a quick turnaround time under 24 hours.

Also for everyone on the board I ran a name and DOB criminal records search on a potential tenant with SPBI. I got the results within 5 days including weekend from the time I submitted the request. The State is clearly putting the pistol permits at the bottom of the pile. This search was an official CT SPBI records search

Could be, either way they run both or that is what the FBI check is who knows lol. I definitely think you're right in that they are neglecting permit applications. I just want to know what month they are in.

There is a number floating around this forum to call the SPBI. My recommendation would be to speak with a supervisor who can hopefully give you the correct info. If time permits I might give them a ring myself along with my local Pd

Forgive this outsider’s observation, but one could note in five years of 500+ posts might lead me to believe that the powers that be in the great state of CT do not wish citizens to carry!

I also note with significant interest there is not one iota of commentary over the years of posts about changing the legislation crippling the CT citizen’s right to carry ~ why is that?

There is a very simple concept here, instead of whining on this forum about how tired you’al are of the legislative prescribed goatrope you must endure to get a “permit/license” why not start a thread on this forum, looking for like minded individuals to organize to change the laws of your land for others in the future to easily carry for their SD in their everyday activities?

For goodness sake Chicago and NY City makes it easier to get permits...geez!
Alternatively you could pack up your belongings and move to, hummm...say...VA:banana:

PS: there seems to be a state level grassroots entity called,
Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL) is a non-partisan, grass roots organization advocating for the right to keep and bear arms (RKBA) in Connecticut. Formed in 2009 and headquartered in Groton, CT the CCDL boasts almost 30,000 members statewide as of April 2018. http://www.ccdl.us/

Since I have not seen hide nor hair reference to or from this group on this forum, ya gets whatcha pay for! Though the June 18 meeting professed to have Gov and other candidates in attendance

You are correct the powers to be do not want us to have permits. I would love to move down South. I check Zillow all the time for second residences in South Carolina and Florida

As to your 2A rights, there are better states to move to that are a lot better than SC or FL. I'd move to the southern part of KY.

Town: Marlborough
Submitted: May 7th
Prints: ink
Check cashed: June 12th
Town Quote: 8-9 weeks

Still waiting- was told today it would be another 3 weeks at least

My friend got her permit in Marlborough a little over 1 year ago. She had to stay on top of them to issue it but she did get it in around 8 weeks. It was multiple calls to both the State and the resident trooper / town hall.

I sent a friendly email to the officer who handles the permit apps in my town. While I typically would call, I figure email is a better way to document my efforts in case I have to file a constructive appeal. In my email I politely asked for a status update reminding them I applied 8 weeks ago. I will keep the board posted if I get a response and what the response is. Anyone speak with CT SPBI today?

Also, I spoke with CT BFPE yesterday. They said the town isn't notified when you file an appeal until the appeal is actually docketed so if you are planning on using the appeal as leverage to get the town to issue you should mention you are appealing to them otherwise they won't even know about it.

SPBI backlog?

Did anyone get a chance to connect with SPBI yesterday or today to verify backlog? On another forum somebody said the state said they are all caught up but we’ve heard on this forum they are only into mid May and I have heard conflicting info when I called. It would be great to get an accurate response. I’m at 8 weeks with no response back. Sent an email to PD yesterday with no response back. Frustrating for sure.

After over 500 posts covering a five-year time span all saying the same thing, I would be forced to conclude that the people of Ct. are being lied to about the operation of their state government. There is no backlog, there is no delay in FBI background checks. There is just the bureaucracy of the state government moving at its own speed and ignoring the state laws because they are the bureaucrats and you are just the peon citizens. The law may require them to do things in a timely manner, but you are powerless to force them to do so and they will ignore you and all others like you. They will lie to you and laugh when you believe their lies time after time. You have but one choice, wait until they decide to issue your permit, no matter how long it takes. You can call and ask questions, but you will be ignored or misled, endlessly. Just sit back like a good citizen, be quiet and wait. Your permit will be issued when they are damned good and ready and not a minute sooner. They don't care.

You need a law similar to Virginia's wherein after 45 days a copy of the dated and recorded application shall become a "Permit'" until either you are disapproved or you receive your endorsed permit.

FYI - confirmed the SPBI is working on May applications. Just passing along that info. Hopefully they can clear up the backlog.

I am going on 16 weeks. My girlfriend put hers in a week after me and got hers two weeks ago....this is beyond frustrating. I checked with the state a month ago and they said there were no problems and I just needed to wait. Trying to get through to them again today.

First, you keep asking will delay your processing, and second, you being the wrong gender also delays your processing. Have not learned anything about government logic?;)

I got through to the state. She told me she has no information for me and the my only point of contact is me is my local PD, and that people need to stop calling there, lol. Checked with the town again and they told me that everyone in my delivery group got theirs two weeks ago, as far as they know there are no issues with my app.
I have no arrests in my life, had secret clearances in the Army and have gone through numerous Federal/State background checks for work in sensitive locations....

No idea what I'm supposed to do besides keep waiting.

Did they cash your checks? I'm optimistic now that summer is basically over that they will be back to full staffing and can start processing the apps quicker. I'm not making excuses for them but I'm sure with summer vacation schedules they were short-staffed this summer.

They cashed them 14 weeks ago....

I've heard of people taking longer, that is what it is. But the fact that many that applied with and after me in town got theirs a couple weeks ago has me worried.
I just want to find a way to make sure I'm still in the pile and not "misplaced"

It varies from town to town but if people in your town applied after you and got their permit already then I too would be worried that either your prints got misplaced or maybe there was an issue with the prints being smudged? The fingerprint card also contains your social security # if I'm not mistaken, that would concern me the most. I wonder if you call the State Police and politely tell them that you are concerned that your personal information is out there, if they would be able to take the 5 minutes to actually look in the system.

The whole process is a mystery. I called back on July 13 and they said they were up to April 14th .. as of last week they are supposedly only up to second week of May. So in 7 weeks they could only clear one month of backlog?? I understand they process job applications and license applications but are there really that many fingerprints that come in that they can't manage the case load? Let them work OT if they want and I bet they could clear up the backlog within 1 week.
