How long does it take to get a pistol permit in CT

I am going on 16 weeks. My girlfriend put hers in a week after me and got hers two weeks ago....this is beyond frustrating. I checked with the state a month ago and they said there were no problems and I just needed to wait. Trying to get through to them again today.

When did your GF apply? There are several on this board who had applications submitted in early May with no response yet.

Hello just came across this thread and joined the forum today.

I submitted my pistol permit application in a CT town (small population) back on 5/21.
The person who takes care of permits (no local PD only State Trooper) was eager to help me with the process but I guess it all comes down to the Middletown office that handles all of CT.
Right now it is 9/4 and I'm still waiting for that phone call from the town.
I called the town back in 8/7 to see what was going on as that would have been a little past the 8 week period and was told they had just gotten a temp permit a few days prior for an individual that submitted back on 4/3.
So I guess it takes about 4 to 4.5 months.

Welcome to the forum! It does appear that recent wait times are around 4 months which is shocking considering they have 8 weeks to complete the process. Hopefully they start to process your application since they are in May for background checks

I'm in the same boat, I've been reading this thread for a while seeing if there were any updates.

I put in my paperwork, handed over the money orders and had my prints done on 14 March 18. I live in a small town where I know more than a few of the police officers and the administration. I already have a Guard Card and an Ammunition Certificate, I was in the CT Army National Guard back in the 90's with an Honorable Discharge. I thought to myself that this was going to be no problem, yeah........no.

I called the local PD on 24 May 18, I was told that I had to get the finger prints redone, the first ones were smudged, so I went on the 24th to have them redone. I had asked if this will delay my process and was told no.

I called the local PD again in July and was told that the Federal background check came back and was clean, they are just waiting on the state.

I called the offices in Middletown, let me tell you, if I ever talked to someone the way I was talked to at my job, I wouldn't have a job. All I wanted to do was talk to someone who was able to help me, but all I ever got was "I don't handle that, hold on I'll transfer you", I was transferred 3 times and then I hung up and just didn't bother anymore.

I call every 2 weeks to the local PD, the records person knows my name, and yes you guessed it, I'm still waiting.

Sorry to hear but it sounds like 4 months is the new norm now. I have to believe that you should be getting yours soon if they are working on May applications now. The feedback I heard was that the State acknowledged they are way behind and they are working on clearing up the backlog, I think in the past they have been able to have desk duty state troopers assist and let the technicians work OT to catch up. Plus, not to make excuses but with summer vacation season over they should be back to a full-time staff now.

I was interested though to hear that the federal check already came back. I thought the State of CT was the point person on the federal check and they sent the federal check back along with the State check at the same time. I know the State database might have some records that aren't in the federal records but any dis-qualifiers I'm sure would be in the federal check. Based on that why can't the town issue? Any serious in the State record would have been sent to the FBI I would assume?

Also, it sounds like having to get the prints re-done set you back. I did the digital prints and I think they went through fine considering I haven't heard anything to the contrary in the 8+ weeks since my application. Keep us posted if you don't mind.

Status Update

I called the FBI. They received my BG check request on 7/8 and returned the request the same day back to the State of CT. July 8th is the same day that I applied and was electronically submitted. Since the State has had the FBI checks since July 8th, do they send those back to the town, or do they send them along with the State background check as well?

Geez whats with the holdup if BG's are same day processes?

It just feels like there is an ulterior motive to delay the process by 2 more months.

The answer to your question can be found in post #512 of this thread.

11 weeks today, still no word from town. Did your town respond to your email inquiry?

Yes my town responded. They called the State, the State said they were still working on May apps but they are making progress. I think the summer is generally a bad time of the year for them with vacations and teachers and school workers submitting fingerprints. I'm hoping they can clear up the backlog. I did confirm with the FBI that they received my fingerprint submission on July 8th and returned it back to the State on the same day. (I applied on July 8th) Does the State send the FBI report back right away to the town? Or do they send it along with the State report?

Did you check with the State to see when your background check was returned to the town?

I did not ask about the FBI stuff.
They told me how long it took for the other person before me and to base my timeline with that.

Every town and every situation is different, the best way for you to track the progress is to call both the FBI and the CT State Police to verify when your prints were received and when they were processed and returned. It does seem that the backlog with the SPBI ebbs and flows and it seems to be a timing issue that some people get stuck in the backlog based on when they submitted and the SPBI case load at that time.

Once you know when your FBI and State report is done and returned you should be able to go back to the issuing authority and remind them of their statutory requirement to approve or deny the permit within 1 week from the date they received the report.

I'm just going to wait until the 25th and then give the town a call.
I don't want to pester them.

SPBI update

Supposedly the State is now doing background checks from June submissions. I didn’t confirm that myself just passing along what I had heard.

Anyone else have any updates? I’m going on 11 weeks

My Update:

I called my small local PD last Friday, it has been 6 months and 1 day, they finally got my paperwork from the state.....................Great!!!

Not so fast mister, not so fast.................what she told me was, now I have to go through a mental health screening (I was perplexed).

I asked a LEO friend of mine about this and she told me it started July 1st, 2018. Oh well at least I can see the light at the end of the very long tunnel.

Good luck to everyone, it is not an easy endeavor.
