Is there any way for you to set the first post formatting to "wrap around" the ad space? I certainly don't mind it there, any help you can get, especially from Google, to pay the bills is just sweet ironic justice... but it would be really handy if it were smart enough to switch over to full length lines after the text gets below the ad space.

Lots of first posts are fairly long quotes of articles or news stories, so the narrow column really makes a big difference.

Just a thought.

I concur with this great observation.

I am not sure but let me poke around a little in the settings and I will see what I can do. :)

Pre-Defined Gun Rights Avatars

I have added a section of pre-defined gun rights avatars to the bottom of the Avatar edit screen (see attached screen shots). These are just the ones I had at hand. If you want to see more added, send them to me at John@OpenCarry.org.

Thanks!

Another thing I've noticed is I've set all my notifications on (instant email for threads, friend requests, ect), I am not getting my friend request notifications.

Don't know if this was discussed yet, but can we have larger file sizes for attachments. There are a lot of educational brochures in the CA forum that did not migrate over and when I went to re-attach the files are way too big now (over 1 MB, full color, print quality PDFs). Would be nice.

I hesitate to allow members to upload such large attachments for a variety of reasons (bandwidth, security, etc).

Instead, if you can send me the files, I will upload them in the forum for you.

I hope this makes sense.

A lead in, introductory paragraph with a link would do the same thing would it not?

Personally, I dislike seeing exceptionally long posts/attachments even if the topic is of interest to me.

That is the best way to handle large articles, especially if they are copyrighted. A snippet with a link to the rest of the article could be considered "fair use." Attaching the whole thing could be considered copyright infringement.

This is not the forum for a debate on IP, but we have seen plenty of cases where data has been published, and for any of several reasons, later retracted, or altered by the original authors. Quoting in full is one way to prevent such shenanigans from happening, or at least documenting when they do. IANAL, but I feel that in some cases, the public's right to know what people are saying greatly outweighs IP issues. Especially on the types of subjects we routinely discuss here. We're talking about the very survival of our Nation in some cases.

JMHO.

P.S. One case in point that comes to the top of my mind involves the case of Gerald Ung. This law student, CHP holder was attacked by a group of most likely quite drunk LAX jock boys early one morning after a round of bar-hopping in downtown Philadelphia. Mr. Ung was forced to defend himself and his girlfriend from a violent attack, and had to shoot his attacker. Said attacker happened to be the son of a prominent Philadelphia lawyer, well connected to the local Republican party. Despite the fact that the entire scene was recorded on video, clearly showing who initiated the attack, and the fact that Mr. Ung himself called 911 to report the incident, he now finds himself facing several charges, including attempted murder. That's the long background... the point is, soon after this happened, self-defense supporters immediately found and published blog and Facebook entries of Mr. Ung's attacker, which clearly demonstrated a party-boy lifestyle and if I remember correctly, even evidence of other violent encounters. Of course, very soon, these on-line publications vanished. If they had originally been published as links only, they would have essentially never been published, as it then becomes "I saw this, but now it's gone..."

There is a world of difference between formally published and copyrighted articles, typically done for compensation, and self-serving posts on a social networking site, where dissemination without expectation for monetary gain is expected.

If I were the owner of the site, I would protect myself by specifically disallowing the insertion of copyrighted articles into the content of this site. I wouldn't worry about postings by individuals who do not generally copyright their material.

Your premise is flawed. There is no overt action required to protect writing under copyright. All writing is owned by the author, some just more aggressively protect their rights than others.

TFred

Once again, people who post on free sites expect their posts to be disseminated. People who write for a living expect to be compensated every time their writings are published. That is the difference. You are right that there is no difference in ownership. However, my point does not hang on ownership, but on expectations.

That's OK. Since we were able to do so before I thought we would be able to do so again. I'll think of something else because sometimes the documents have different versions or need to be revised. Keeping up on this might be more work than you bargained for.

I want the old forum back :^(

Felt the same way when the change was first contemplated and more so then first few days of having to learn where everything was and how to use it.

The problem likely stems from not being familiar with vBulletin options and location of controls - once you get that down, you will discover a whole new world. There are many helpful hints contained in the earlier pages of this thread.

The old WoW server was 18th century design, offered poor support, was a PITA from an administrator's POV, had no real flexibility for users and constant crashes strained everyone's patience. Once you complete the learning curve, feel sure that you will agree that the move was a wise choice, beneficial to all.

John,

Is there a way to change my default for the subscriptions to and 'unchecked' box? I prefer to have it unchecked on my home states forum as I do not need emails from that forum. I only expect email notifications from forums outside my home state. Currently I uncheck the box for every response I make. If not, I just wish the uncheck box was closer to the text box.
You can change your overall default setting from the "General Settings" page, located here: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions

Scroll down to the section titled: "Default Thread Subscription Mode:"

I don't believe there is a way to set the option per forum, so your best bet would probably be to set it to what your most used setting is, then change it for the ones you need to.

TFred (not John, but same answer, I'm pretty sure!)

ETA: Ha ha, guess I was too quick... but others may want to know too, later on. :)

New Section Request Under Open Carry Brigade

Admins - there does not seem to be an area that one can go to to get OC Info for specific Corporations/Companies. I have had to search through various forums/posts/threads to get the information and at times it is contradictory. I suggest the following:

- New Section Under Open Carry Brigade for Corporation/Company Support For OC/Lawful Carry

Any information there should be accompanied by links/letters of support from said Corporation/Company.

While I understand there may be concerns about such a "list", I believe it would make important information available to members in a central location.

I agree we do need this to clean up conflicting threads on Corporate Policies... Not to mention it will help us look more organized and have less BS posted over can we or can't we OC there...
