I'm trying to flush some of this out with regards to public lands (NF/BLM/NP) in
a CalGuns thread.
Keep up the good work MudCamper, I've been a backseat admirer of your work for a while now in regards to LOC and UOC law research when it comes to packing hand cannons in the wilderness areas of this FUBAR state.
The back story on me is I backpack in miles out of the way for fishing trips, I love going for Trout of all variety in this state. In doing so, I've stuck with the following as the whole trip for me is a fishing expedition -
12027. Section 12025 does not apply to, or affect, any of the following:
(g) Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers, or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition.

Basically I consider the whole trip a fishing expedition as I fish and LOC all the way in and all the way back out... until I get to areas where I know there will be people meaning less chance of animal run in's. Therefore it's LOC all the way in. I'm unsure if 12027(g) allows LOC, but I'm miles out. As the saying goes, if a bear takes a dump in the forest and no one is there to smell it, does it still stink? I'm out and away, 99% sure I'm not going to see or bother a soul let alone any LE.
Why do I carry? I can't tell you how many times I've been rattled at (first shot is always snake shot) or seen bear out there (they don't worry me as much as they usually run away and/or hate pepper spray). I've only seen a mountain lion once, and it was for a split second as it ran over the top of the hill out of my view (I also see their tracks frequently as I can do some tracking). That freaked me out as it was moving much faster than any wildlife I've seen. They scare the hell out of me as I really doubt I could hit one in full attack mode with their speed. Also scary, the human element - e.g. marijuana grows. Never ran across one, hope I never do.
Those are the reasons I carry out there. I'm miles from help, have no cell reception, and yes... I sometimes play stupid and pack in alone for days at a time. I like my peaceful alone time with nothing but a fishing pole and the sound of a creek/stream.
I'm ranting here... anyway keep up the good work in research MudCamper. I'm interested in seeing how AB144 will effect 12027(g) for those of us who absolutely need to open carry as we're miles out away from anyone or anything that can provide help.
