My encounters in Martinsburg this week so far.

I was at the Daily Grind with my sister and our kids, and a gentleman a few tables away asked if I had a permit. I said no, WV does not require one to OC. He then asked if I had taken a class, and I said that I had, because I wanted to. He was very polite and curious, and agreed it was an effective form of defense. The conversation then turned to my newborn baby, and parted on friendly terms.

Two days later I was picking my mom up from an appointment, and lifting my newborn's carseat into the car, and a car pulled up to drop a woman off. The woman got out, walked by and said "My husband and I just wanted to tell you you get the cool mom of the day award, for having a gun and a baby!"

Then there has been the typical joking "I saw you had a gun, and thought I'd better open the door for you!" type of comments. But primarily the majority response is very positive, curious and encouraging.

Don't knock it - with women's lib, we lost much of the chivalry that went with it. This way we regain some of it.....an armed society is a polite society type of thing and they are in there own way acknowledging that they see and recognize what you are doing.

I think I know some people here too. ;)

I have attended most of the WVCDL protests over the years. There were 2 Manchin protests at his offices in Charleston and Martinsburg (in late 2012/early 2013 I believe) where they requested people not OC. That was the only time I recall that request. There was a specific reason but I don't remember what it was, possibly the close proximity to federal property where weapons are prohibited.

At every other protest OC was welcome, including one outside a dinner at the Charleston Civic Center attended by Manchin, Rockefeller, and Joe Biden.

It is possible there was some good reason they requested people not to OC at the manchin protest. Anyway WVCDL is a good organization that I support and would be glad to learn they fully support OC.

Not doing so at all. Merely dislike the implication that chivalry was contigent upon my being armed, even in a joking manner, fom strangers.

I am always holding the door for women, men , children, the elderly etc...just being curteous.

One time had a female at our local grocery store start yelling at me that she can open her own door and she isn't "useless just because I am a female"..........so I let go of the spring loaded door.......

I was up in the Huntington area this past weekend for a family funeral. As usual I had my sidearm openly carried in its holster as I went out and about various places and I was as well received as if I were wearing a belt with nothing attached. This is just as expected. While in the Barboursville Steak and Shake a gentleman saw me and handed me a WVCDL card when he got up from his table. I thanked him and let him know I was already familiar with them through VCDL in Virginia. Good to see folks actively spreading the news about WVCDL in West Virginia!

I know several people have mentioned that they haven't gotten much of a reaction OC'ing in WV. Well..that's awesome in my opinion, and the way it should be everywhere. I've OC from time to time here and over the past 20 years have never had an issue, the most i've gotten is the typical "what kinda gun is that?" Or "are you a cop...nope"
People here are a little more comfortable with it than most places and that's a good thing in my opinion.

Yeah it rocks. My family always laughs at me because whenever we have to leave the state for whatever reason, on the way back I always say "whew! ok we can breathe easier!" when we cross back into WV.
