Headline says it all, attack was stopped when a handgun was retrieved and the bobcat was laid to rest. Bobcat attacks: Another reason to carry at home!

You actually CAN carry a gun on your person in Massachusetts with no license whatsoever!

title XX MGL Ch 140 section 121

The provisions of sections 122 to 129D, inclusive, and sections 131, 131A, 131B and 131E shall not apply to:

(A) any firearm, rifle or shotgun manufactured in or prior to the year 1899;

(B) any replica of any firearm, rifle or shotgun described in clause (A) if such replica: (i) is not designed or redesigned for using rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition; or (ii) uses rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition which is no longer manufactured in the United States and which is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade; and

(C) manufacturers or wholesalers of firearms, rifles, shotguns or machine guns.

Sec 131 describes the licenses nessecary to carry firearms.

So if you have a pistol

A) made before 1899
B) a cap and ball or flintlock/percussion etc revolver/pistol
C) a replica of a pre-1899 handgun using obsolete ammunition such as a reproduction colt single action army chambered in .32-20 Winchester

you can carry with no license and you're good to go.

This isn't just a legal theory I concocted in my basement, it's been done

Here's a news story detailing how two BGs beat the heat after being charged and convicted of possessing a Harrington and Richardson revolver made in 1896.

Supreme Judicial Court: No license needed if the gun was made before 1900

Interesting...sorta of limits your carry options to wheel guns...

Nevertheless, it is still basically impossible to carry in MA...unless of course you can meet the above requirement

Yeah, well I'm ok with wheel guns, my only handgun right now is a S&W Model 10.

Now if only I could find an originial production M&P revolver (basically what S&W called them before they used the term model 10)

If I can just get my hands on an original production model 10 from 1898 I could carry openly or concealed and be within the law, although I'm sure open carry would being harassement, just make sure the gun was made in 1898.

Note, this revolver isn't mine, it's just an example of an 1898 model, mine was built in 1940.
