What's life in Wyoming like?

I'm a paramedic, and my family and I have bounced around the idea of moving western. Not going into all the details of why, there's just too many reasons. I've been looking at services looking for flight medic services, and there are apparently a fair share of offerings for such in Wyoming, especially in the Riverton area. I was just curious for some perspectives on your state and living there. I'm currently a North Carolina resident.

I don't live in WY but have family there and visit often.

Be prepared for miles and miles of miles and miles; especially Riverton. It will make the least populated part of eastern NC look like downtown NYC, beautiful country in a valley between 2 mountain ranges. There is more public land and hunting and fishing opportunity than you will be able to take advantage of in several years.

No personal income tax and low overall taxes and some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. If Colorado goes to the dogs (Kalifornia invaders) that is where the wife and I are headed after retirement.

Fine by me. I live in the rural mountainous wesyern NC area, and even it's too crowded for me. I want somewhere that we will be left alone and don't have to worry too much about things. Thanks for the input!

Please visit Wyoming and look at several areas besides Riverton. Unfortunately, that corner of the state is not the best if you are seeking freedom and peace. The SW corner of the state has lots of crime, and lots of "cops." Lots of good people too, don't get me wrong, but you might want to talk to the folks here before you make up your mind.

Visit these forums and talk to the people who live here in Wyoming. I've been here in the NE corner for 8 years now, and am active on both these boards.

Reason for Riverton is due to the job offerings. Can't be picky when you need a particular field of employment lol.

I'll likely be making the move there next year, myself. After 13 years in VA (military move) I am ready for more rural regions and since I used to love camping in WY as a teenager I figure that's the place to go. Plus... who wouldn't want more freedom and less taxes? :)

We're also looking to move to the western side of Wyoming in the next few years (I have some things to finish up here before we can actually make the big move). We're currently in the Seattle area, and looking to head to either the Evanston or Alpine area. Any suggestions other than a good 4 wheel drive with extra gas cans? My husband OC's just about everywhere, and I OC when I can (when I'm not working, essentially).

The Evanston corner of the state is rapidly becoming a very bad and dangerous place. MOST of the crime, bad cops and political nonsense in the state happen there. If you want better freedom, especially the freedom to carry openly, you don't want to go there. I don't know anything about Alpine. As for 4WD, it's nice to have, especially if you must drive in the snow. I've lived almost nine years here in the NE corner of the state, at nearly 5,000 feet, driving a small Saturn with front wheel drive and good snow tires. But I don't go out when the roads are really bad ever.

Good luck, and I do hope you will come to visit us here in the NE. The weather and freedom are the best in the state...

Why Wyoming?

OK, from a resident of near 40 years, I will give you the scoop on Wyoming. The population is still less than 600,000 and holding steady. The weather, most likely plays a huge part, in people not wanting to live here. The wind does blow nearly everyday and combined with winter lows, that can reach -20 to -30F, wind chill can drop to -50 to -60F. The winters can last from mid September to mid April. I have seen snow more than once on the 4th of July. Summers are short, with few days above 90F.

I will now (even though I shouldn't) tell you the good things about Wyoming. The state has no income tax and most sales taxes run 5-6%, depending on the county. The property taxes do run a bit high. A home with an approx. worth of say $150,000. would run about $1300. yearly.
Wyoming is made up of mostly public lands, and very little problems with access. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Do you enjoy camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, all terrain vehicles and hiking? The Wind River Mountains host Gannet peak at 13,084'. The Killpecker sand dunes, in the county of Sweetwater are the largest migrating dunes in North America. The dunes are divided into both wilderness protected and recreational, with a special beauty, found no where else. Grasslands, Mountains, Lakes, rivers and streams.

The "Mama" has unfairly tainted the South West part of the state. It has experienced cycles of booms, but seldom busts. The SW has the most stable job market in the state. I could quit my present job tomorrow morning and would be employed, by the afternoon. I have never locked my door or my truck and I have never been victim to theft. I could leave my house and midnight and walk anywhere unafraid. I can jump on my ATV
and ride for hours (from my driveway). I would definitely discourage anybody thinking of moving here, not to. It is a cold windy miserable place. Please, if you visit, clean up after your self. You pack it in, You pack it out. Oh yea, one more thing, the Bear proof trash cans are for real. lol

Believe me, property taxes still don't really compare to here in the Seattle area.. I've been kind of keeping an eye on the accounting jobs out there, and it looks like they're really just about anywhere, which is nice. We're just kind of sick of the mass of Californians migrating north and adding to the hippie numbers. And I do MUCH better if there are fewer people around.

Stayed at the Cheyenne KOA, east of the train depot along the interstate, Cheyenne seemed nice. Stayed about 5 days.

My boys loved the UP running just about all day long. Good bars, restaurants, a little too hipster it seemed, I could live with that. Laramie looked like a lumber town with a college campus tossed into the mix. Rawlins.....truck stop. Rock Springs, was only a fuel stop and two new camper tires, but it seemed like small town USA. Not too bad.

So, my experience with Wyoming is limited to the I-80 corridor, and fuel stops.....Wyoming seems great.

Is Evanston and Uinta County really that bad?

I was wondering is it really that bad in Evanston and in the surrounding county of Uinta that it's in? I am looking to move there soon from Chicago and what I have found in my research is that it seems pretty nice for small town America of which my ideal is from about 5000 to 20000 in population for a town out west since I love the west a lot. Can I hear some responses from anyone living in Evanston or from Evanston?

That is, of course, relative. To someone from Chicago, Evanston will probably seem like heaven. :) I never lived there, but I've been there. The weather is terrible, and the reputation of "law enforcement" isn't the best. There is a nearby indian reservation, with all of the common problems found in such places. Not necessarily their fault, just the way it is.

That area might work out just fine for you, but I would suggest you take a week or so to visit some other places in the state. We all have access to mountains, fishing, hunting, beautiful scenery and so forth. Cheyenne, Casper and Jackson Hole are the only actual "cities" in the state, with a few larger towns like Gillette in between city and small town. Small towns are the rule, rather than the exception. But you won't know what's truly going to fit into your life and needs unless you look around. Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask questions about my little corner here in the NE. :)

I too have been considering Wyoming as a place to relocate.

Along with Idaho, parts of Montana.
I presently reside in Washington State and I'm getting very tired of the socialist, Kalifornia mentality that resides here.
Unfortunately like many other states, Kalifornian's have swarmed here, changing the rules/laws as they establish themselves.
Eastern Washington and Oregon are nice places, but both are ruled by Seattle and Portland. Need to get away from that.
Immediately became interested in Sheridan. However, not so sure finding work in the area will be easy. I'm 53 so the jobs I took during my first 40 or so years are limited.
I believe in America and have respect for those who so unselfishly sacrificed their lives for our nation. Very much a patriot. So, I would guess Wyoming would be a good fit in that regard.
I've been thinking about trying to find a railroad job. From what I understand that's not too hard in the NE corner of the state...
6'04", clean and in good shape... I should still have some years left.... Any advice? Thanks :)
