If you are camping (as opposed to one day hiking) thisis the kit to get. 2.5 gal of clean, safe water in about 20 minutes from any source. I have it, the jugs collapse down, and the extra chem packets are tiny. weighs maybe a pound empty total.

Respectfully,

I have been backpacking and pumping water since I could walk and have used dozens (literally) of different water purification systems. I finally found the best...

The Sawyer In Line filter is the greatest! It weighs almost nothing, you just splice it into your bladder hose, fill the bladder up at the source (use a bandana as a pre-filter if the water has large particulates) and you are good to go!

I hang my bladder and use it as a gravity filter in camp.

If you are looking for something to have while hiking, as opposed to a camp/SHTF filter you could also lug out to the woods, consider http://www.campingsurvival.com/sustcowapusy.html.

Lightweight. Can fit in your shirt pocket (OK, end sticks out). Does exactly what it is supposed to do without tacticool add-ons. Not expensive.

stay safe.

The MiniWorks EX is the best-selling filter on the market, delivering long-lasting, fully field-maintainable water filtration. Its durable ceramic element ensures protection, pumps water for years, and can be cleaned repeatedly for full recovery, with no tools required for complete disassembly. The MiniWorks is also lightweight, compact, and, thanks to its innovative AirSpring Accumulator[suP]™[/suP], capable of pumping one liter of water per minute. http://www.msrgear.com/watertreatment/miniworks.asp
