I wonder what would have happened if they tried acting like a bunch of Highlanders in Santa Fe?

Then I would repel them with my Colt; or, evade them in one.

(That counts as a double! Guns and cars in one word! :monkey )

This thread is a reminder for those that don't carry 24/7 where allowed by law, that crap happens everywhere, everyday.

This story hits home for me: literally, as my wife, child, and two other females from the family were at this Walmart not that long before this happened (4 hours or so), shopping while on a "staycation" in the area. It was a small comfort knowing that two of them were OCing sidearms. ;)
This area is very popular with vacationers as its not far from many scenic spots in the Sedona area.

Heh, was just coming to share this very vid. It is hard to watch - amateur hour all over. =/ Antagonists wandering every which way, officers not watching each other's backs, failure to secure anyone (even after multiple failures with Taser, pepper spray, and baton), all sorts of Jerry Springer-esque flailing at each other... What a complete and absolute fustercluck.

I need an image of the lady saying "Y'all [expletives] need Jesus," only with "training" substituted.

They were caught completely off guard, they should have been more mentally prepared. But Cottonwood is a small town, and they may not have ever dealt with gypsies, these were not religious loons, these were gypsies. I have dealt with them both as a LEO, and store security. There operation is create confusion, divide the authority they deal with. A few go into a store and create a diversion, while the rest steal.

When I first stated out, I was a municipal conservation officer, I dealt with parks. I had these type incidents, and we learned that you do not wade in. You form a line, and maintain that line, a couple officers pick out ONE suspect at a time and restrain that one. Rinse then repeat.

It is lucky they did not shoot each other, but they did their best for what training they received.

I think it's pretty clear that training was insufficient, though.

I agree with you on how to settle the situation, divide and contain. The officers had equipment and a numerical advantage on their side but failed to use it effectively. There should never have been the opportunity for one of their own to get separated and dogpiled like that.

And the Walmart employee in the grey t-shirt needs to be fired. Srsly.

I thought the same thing, but the Chief is honoring him. He did have good intentions, but good intentions can get someone killed. I do not want to criticize them too much, it was the supervisors fault they were not prepared for this. This is why you have training seminars on different types of problems, and how to handle them. Every officer should have been forced to keep a yearly training standard.

Personally I loved the seminars, overtime pay, free food, and getting to meet other officers in the community.

sorry, first blush the LEs kinda & sorta walked into the middle of the group w/o assessing the situation...and then lost control of whatever control they felt they had. (shots ringing out and someone hollar'g get down, get down, get down or i'm going to shoot you!! REALLY)

no where did i see any LE say as they approached...hey what's going on folks? nope...it was '....lets get this ppl separated ...blah blah blah...and let the WWF begin. and then the LEs got panic'd when their brute intimidation tactics and then their tools failed them...instead of backing up and regrouping they splintered and it was fortunate not more died cuz there were a lot of discharges...

Momma....if you are whining they are killing your youngn's you should have gotten control of them immediately.

bloke hollar'g you're hitting children, you should have gotten control of the 'children'.

sorry, cluster duck as already mentioned and it was the most unprofessional exhibit i have ever witnessed and i have personally seen one or two in my life time. not their finest effort and to lose life and the life long trauma on both sides over this is situation which got completely out of control is truly beyond my sphere of understanding...

They can only do with the training given them, I don't know if depts still train for gypsies, or whatever they call them these days. Riot training should have kicked in, but who knows if in a small town they have even had that.

Actually that was choreographed, but not by the police, standard practice, create confusion, and mayhem.
Didn't mean to give the impression that I don't understand that.

I can't fault the Walmart employee at least he kept one of them engaged, disengaged and then only reengaged when the man grabbed an officer.

On second viewing, I'm inclined to agree. He also didn't start swinging as early as I thought he had.

I think his attempts at fisticuffs were awkward and embarrassing, but the same might be said of all participants in this fracas.
