MOUNT PLEASANT - A man was shot in broad daylight in the Wal-Mart parking lot Friday afternoon.

The call came in at about 1:40 p.m. that someone had been shot at Wal-Mart, 3049 Oakes Road. Radio reports also said police should look for a suspect who was described as a thin black man in his 20s, bald, wearing glasses, a gray hoodie and blue jeans. He was last seen driving away from the scene in a white car, similar to a Ford Contour.

No one was in custody within an hour of the crime, Mount Pleasant Police Department Capt. Brian Smith said.

He also said he was not yet aware of any eyewitnesses to the shooting itself, although the numerous officers on the scene were interviewing witnesses, and Smith did not yet have their full reports.

There were people who saw the immediate aftermath, including Monica Chudzik, 25, of Caledonia. Chudzik said she was at the Wal-Mart customer service area to exchange an item when the victim came running into the store.

She said the victim, a man she estimated as in his 30s or 40s, came running in, clutching his hand to his chest and yelled, "I just got shot!"

He repeated that as employees began to run to him, Chudzik said.

Early radio reports said the victim had been shot in the upper right shoulder.

A store employee told Chudzik the shooter had driven by the victim and shot from a vehicle, but that was unconfirmed by police in the first hour after the shooting.

Law officers responded in force; shortly after the shooting there were approximately a dozen vehicles on the scene from the Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant police departments and Racine County Sheriff's Department.

They cordoned off a large area in front of the store, but the focal point of their interest was a square of police tape straight out from the large Wal-Mart Supercenter letters on the building. Officers searched the ground for any shell casings they could find; one officer was overheard to say they were searching for a single casing.

Smith, however, later said they did not know for sure if there had been more than one shot.

"We're pulling videotape" of the parking lot, he said, in case it might show the crime.

Smith said witnesses gave a specific vehicle license plate that came back to a vehicle in the city of Racine. Officers were investigating.

Yep No need to carry a gun, no sir. :banghead:

One minute the cops say they have no eyewitness and the next they say a witness gave them the license plate number. Which is it? Don't tell me they are going to botch this investigation up too! They will probably ask the victim if he owns a fire arm and then arrest him too.

Now that I think about it maybe it is all a set up.

But seriously what does that tell you? That is a very busy Walmart. If there are no eyewitnesses it is incredible. The fact that people don't want to step up and give any info on this criminal is ridiculous and thank you to those citizens who did help out.

Isn't it funny how people will complain about the riff raff, complain about those of us who carry for self protection, but yet they won't come forward and give up any info that will help get these criminals off the street.

Right, Alot of people are gonna look at us like were crazy for carrying a firearm. Be a different story if the victim had a firearm to defend himself with though. I wasTold by my step-mother "I dont understand why you would need to carry one". For one,I have a family I am going to protect... I will protect any other citizen in harms way. The ones that think we're paranoid, will change the way they think after we save their or their Childs life.
