Is VMFA posted?

From their website, it seems to be private. While it wouldn't surprise me if it is posted ... If it is, are there metal detectors or searches? i.e is "don't ask, don't tell" in effect?

I must go. I will not deny my parents the opportunity to see the terracotta warriors. It's on their bucket lists.

milady...OCDO 2009:
Not sure about the Science Museum, but the VMFA is 100% ok to carry. I OC there whenever my girlfriend drags me along to go with her. Here's what usually happens:

The security ninjas ask me to leave. I tell them no. They try to get my name (the guy actually pulled out a notepad and a pen- I had to stop myself from laughing). I refuse. They return to their secret holes in the wall. They know that carry is legal/preempted there, and they can't do anything about it, but they still try.

Have carried regularly at the VMFA w/o a problem in the past.

Have never had a difficulty carrying in the Science Museum. Watched numerous Imax presentations while OCing.
I have not been there in some time though..

I see now it is state owned. That makes me wonder if it falls under EO50.

Guess I'll find out on Saturday.

After-Action Report

VMFA has an EO50 sign. That made it don't ask, don't tell. No detectors or wanding -- good thing they don't treat visitors like common criminals.

The terracotta warriors are impressive. I wish there had been more to the exhibit, but they're still incredible.

From what I can tell Virginia law does not statutorily ban firearms in government buildings, openly or concealed. Is that correct?

That is correct.

There is an Executive Order, EO50, signed by our previous governor, Terry McAuliffe, that prohibits carry in Executive Department buildings. He didn't have the votes to do anything else, and even the proposed rule garnered a majority of comments from people opposed, but he did it anyway. Our current governor is also an anti, and I can't see him rescinding that EO.

The good news is failure to leave when asked is only a trespassing charge, not a firearms violation, and the governor's office is well aware their signs are smoke.

If that is the case then the Executive Order can only apply to government employees. Code of Virginia § 18.2-119 applies to private property and/or public property closed to the public. See Price v. Commonwealth, 164 SE 2d 676 - Va: Supreme Court 1968. https://scholar.google.com/scholar_...+164+S.E.2d+676,+679+(1968)&hl=en&as_sdt=4,47 If you have state business to attend to in a public building then trespass cannot result unless you commit a crime, JMHO.

Would a judge rule that the museum is an "Executive Department building"?

If the sign is not legal, then it follows even a trespass charge should not be levied against you.

First, the EO says offices, it says nothing about public gathering areas.

Second, stupid officers do stupid things. What is the saying? beat the charge but can't beat the ride.

We must take every precaution to protect our citizens and state employees from gun violence. We cannot wait until a tragedy occurs to decide to address it. Prevention requires us to address areas of concern before they are realized. Accordingly, I hereby declare that it is the policy of the Commonwealth that open carry of firearms shall be prohibited in offices occupied by executive branch agencies, unless held by law enforcement, authorized security, or military personnel authorized to carry firearms in accordance with their duties. Within 30 days of the date of this Executive Order, the Director of the Department of General Services (DGS) shall issue guidance prohibiting carrying weapons openly in offices occupied by executive branch agencies.

Tess,
How did your visit go?

I went to see them today with my family and enjoyed seeing something I remember being featured on a kids' TV show in England when they were discovered so it was good to see them in person.

As a strange coincidence, some more of the Terracotta Warriors are in a similar exhibition right now in Liverpool, the city where I was born.

I looked when I went and did not see signs

I did see one on the entrance to the PARKING GARAGE!!!!! The building? not so much. If it is there, it is not prominent. The exhibit is worth the price of admission in my never to be humble opinion. Family members well entertained.

Yes, the exhibit itself was awe-inspiring. I would have liked to visit the rest of the museum, but parents and spouse were tired.
