Verticle Shoulder Holster

I have had a cheap horizontal shoulder holster i would wear on occaision but decided I'd like to have a shoulder holster for some open carry so I got a leather verticle holster for my Glock 19 and really like it.

It is comfortable but since I have never really worn one I have been wearing it for 3 to 5 hours a day for the last 3 days trying to get used to wearing one.

It seems to be a good option to add to the mix, especially since I like to carry a couple large knives and it breaks up everything from being on my waiste and I get the added benefit of a place for a couple extra mags of ammo.

Thoughts on them from the OC crowd?

It just takes getting use to. You are aware that Ohio knife law has changed, going into effect end of March.

New section (H)

ORC 2923.12(H) For purposes of this section, "deadly weapon" or "weapon" does not include any knife, razor, or cutting instrument if the instrument was not used as a weapon .

So, carrying a knife openly or concealed is not a crime.

The main reason is most long term firearm carrying citizens consider these holsters a problem is if you need to defend yourself you and draw your firearm you are forced to sweep bystanders, behind and through your strong arm to get your SD firearm to the ready.

OP, understand it’s a highly specialized holster with some very specific training requirements needed to master its use because you are cross drawing which take more time vice pulling from a belt holster on your strong side and to be candid, nobody puts in that effort. Further, ranges get "cranky" due to safety concerns, letting their shooters draw and fire from the shoulder on the normal firing arm...

PS...when driving xcountry i move my OC'd firearm to a shoulder holster 1) saves my hip/seatbelt side; 2) makes my SD firearm extremely accessible in case it's needed; 3) nice LEs can be shown quite readily where my SD firearm is located.
[please note LEs know immediately the registered owner has a privilege permit!

Prior to vacating my vehicle during stops my SD firearm is switched back to my OC'd holster on my hip.

Ah, the benefits of being left-handed.

I wear my EDC cross-draw on my belt, which eliminates the seat belt issue and the need to transfer my firearm from one side to the other when entering/exiting my vehicle.

Rottman, where did you find your holster?

I wore a shoulder holster 5 days a week 8 to 10 hours a day for over 3 decades

To carry my secondary pistol in.

I wear a shoulder holster when I am back packing or canoe camping.

I have settled on all thumb break horizonal holsters.

None of the vertical holsters i have tried and owned have worked very well.

Either they have no securement or they have a strap that is hard to get at and remove.

The ones without securement tended to have the handgun fall out fairly often.

The ones with the strap tend to be slow on the draw.

Yep, the strap isn't the quickest for drawing but everything has it's pros & cons.

2a4all, I found it on ebay. Seller was massimo_gunleather_company It's pretty comfortable and for $85 I'm satisfied LOL

I don't and never have like a shoulder holster. I used one while in armored vehicles , in the Army, but not by choice. I openly carry a well holstered 1911 on a daily basis and I drive a truck and a motorcycle. The holster rig I use is the "Wild Bunch" rig and I did some research on how Cowboys wore their firearms on the range. I can draw easily, got a strap to hold it in, I can slide it around the belt depending on my needs. It just works for me. YMMV. Now be calm, and don't bidge about it until you try it.

Holsters are a personal item determined by trial and error. By preference and what you are trying to accomplish. There are many that will tell you they have boxes and boxes of holsters trying to find the right one.

You mention carrying a side arm while hunting. In some states that is forbidder. Check your state. If permitted to carry while hunting many use a Bandito Type Shoulder Holster. There are many styles.
