While firearm advocates grumble at the massive social/newspeek media coverage whenever a terrorist/mass shooting [who’s ever definition you follow] JQCitizen reels in the shock and awe, politicos begin adjusting their pulpits, LEs begin their mantra of ‘be on the lookout for copy cat suspects’, ad nauseam.
I have done ad hoc research many years ago, before the alleged proliferation of educational shooting, regarding the symbiotic newspeek relationship and terrorist activities. Bottom line, even tho studies found terrorist activity decreased if not publicly glamorized, newspeek still pushed the story to increase their profit ~ PERIOD!
Since US newspeek wave the 1st and then their favorite “public has a right to know” banners these entities have been running amok to include the addition of social media.
Sri Lanka, NZ, [the fire in paris was broadcast as terrorist related by two of our own members] and others have shown the pervasiveness of how the world’s newspeek/social media are profiting on events which in the past wouldn’t of reached anybody’s attention for weeks, yet within minutes everyone is now aware and the scenarios of what i bolded above has already started to roll through the media.

This study uses a media distortion analysis to examine the New York Times coverage of mass public shooting incidents occurring in the United States from 1966 to 2016. A comparison between media coverage and actual incidents is used to identify the characteristics influencing the newsworthiness of mass public shootings. This work expands the breadth and depth of media and mass public shooting research, strengthening the validity of previous findings, and identifying new characteristics influencing newsworthiness. Findings indicate significant predictors of newsworthiness include higher casualties and injuries, as well as perpetrators that are young, Middle Eastern, and ideologically motivated. School shootings are more likely to receive any coverage, and all non-workplace shootings receive salient levels of coverage. An incident is also more likely to receive any coverage if a combination of weapons is used. These findings have important implications for public knowledge and perceptions of mass public shootings.
