Upcoming Visit to Hastings

Howdy Folks!
While I've gotten pretty comfortable openly carrying my sidearm in Colorado, and know where to avoid carrying (i.e. City and County of Denver), I am planning a trip to Nebraska on the 18th and 19th of June, so wanted to know what the situation on open carry might be in Nebraska.

I checked out posts about the constitutional provision AI-1 and other information available, then focused on the location we would visit. I checked the City of Hastings website and reviewed ordinances prohibiting concealed carry but saw no language regarding open carry. So I called the police department in Hastings to get an answer directly from them. They told me that open carry was legal in Nebraska. They indicated they'd likely get calls from citizens who might see my sidearm openly carried and send an officer around to check things out, but indicated it shouldn't be a problem.

So, in a couple of weeks, I'll be headed to Hastings for a competition metal detecting hunt. We'll stay at a local motel in Hastings, eat at local establishments and possibly do a bit of shopping in Hastings.

If any of ya'll have personal experience with open carry in Hastings, I'd love to hear your story. I figure I'll just go about my business and don't anticipate any problems whatsoever.

Hope some of you folks have experiences in Hastings you can share relative to open carry.

Blessings,

Is This Thing On?

Howdy Folks!
Since I created this post, the silence has been deafening. Not a single response in like 10 days or thereabouts. This thread has been about as busy as bingo night at the coma clinic. Is this thing on? I wasn't expecting a stampede of replies, but then again, wasn't anticipating none whatsoever. I've seen less traffic here than a square dance caller at a funeral home!

We'll be in Hastings on the 18th and 19th of June. I'll be OC'ing my XDm .40 on my right hip and maybe wearing a Stetson. Yes, and actual Stetson. I anticipate that folks in Hastings will be every bit as gracious and hospitable as they were last year when I visited that town unarmed. Heck, I didn't even own a handgun back then.

Anyhow, I still hope somebody has insight out there and willing to share with a visitor to your state. Would be sorta nifty to have a local perspective on OC.

Blessings,
M-Taliesin

I live in Hastings

Sorry, I don't have any direct information past what the PD told you. I must also confess a marked lack of information about officers and how they react to things. Without question, some will be calmer and some will be antsier.

I can tell you I haven't seen anyone open carrying in the past year. County and city owned buildings are posted "No guns", but that's probably not a big shock. The museum is posted no guns.

Good luck with your metal hunting.

I just got home from Hastings. I kept my sidearm on my belt the entire time we were on the road from Aurora Colorado to Hastings Nebraska. Once we got there, I wore my pistol openly carried everywhere I went.

We had breakfast one morning at the Garden, and another morning at McDonalds. No problems. I went several times to Russ's supermarket and again, no problems. I visited with their store managers while there, mainly to compliment them on the checker who waited on us. She was fabulous. Nice gal, very vivacious and fun to deal with. I also stopped and went inside at Godfather's and after viewing their menu and being informed they close at 10pm (it was well after 9pm due to a night hunt held at Dyer park) I just decided I'd do without. We stayed at the Roadway Inn, and they never batted an eye over my pistol.

All in all, my open carry experience in and around Hastings was trouble free, as was equally true with the rest of Nebraska. That includes stops in Kearney, North Platte and several other locations.

Thanks for the information, but I had a terrific time in Hastings and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Nice town too. If I ever moved to Nebraska, I believe Hastings would be a great place to live.

Thanks again for your reply,
Blessings,

Welcome to the Great state of Nebraska-

Welcome to the Great state of Nebraska-even if your from CO. Sorry I had to put that in there for some reason. Dont worry the NE forum is pretty slow and can be several weeks before anyone talks on it. You just have to check it out every time you can. I happened to be on vacation last week otherwise I would of responded. I dont think it wouldn't of helped you though. I've never been in Hastings when carry OC or CC yet. But the laws as I understand them for OC in the state is no permit needed unless in the city limits of Omaha. And no government buildings or functions. Heck you can walk into a bank if you OC. But you cant when CC. UH? Dont understand that one.

I'm sure the more western side of the state probably wont hassle you or they just dont see it.
Any how.. again welcome and just keep looking on the board for activity. I know I would like to talk to others in the state. I live south of Plattsmouth by the mighty MO river which is out of its banks.

Sincerly,
Nebduckman
