I just remembered to post this - it was a busy weekend and I forgot for a few days.

Saturday 10/24, around 11:30 AM, I was in transit between Academy Sports in Hattiesburg and the public range in Brooklyn - on Hardy St. in front of USM campus to be exact. Saw a young-ish man walking on the sidewalk opposite campus, bearing a rather large Confederate flag. As I got closer I saw he had on a black/dark gray helmet, black "tactical" vest, some stuff on the vest (black on black was hard to distinguish while driving), and a holstered black pistol (first impression was Glock, but again, hard to tell while driving). He was just walking on the sidewalk by himself, holding the flag, smiling and waving at traffic. No idea what prompted it, but I definitely did a triple take.

Edit: I spent an hour or two at the range, mostly plinking with my Marlin 795. I had intended to put a hundred or so rounds through my new Springfield XD-S, but I forgot all of my 9mm FMJ at home and only had a box of 25 JHPs, so that gun's workout was severely restricted. Range was empty and I had a lot of fun anyway.

That is kinda odd for around here, especially around the campus. I have lived in Hattiesburg about 4 yrs. now and have heard about this range in Brooklyn, but have never been. If you could give me directions from H'burg, it would be greatly appreciated. I have a new pistol that needs some break-in.

I marked it on Google maps, you can go to satellite view and see the range.

  1. Drive south on 49 until you see the "BROOKLYN NEXT LEFT" sign.
  2. Turn left after the sign onto J C Stone Rd. / Old Hwy 49. (Google Maps has you drive a bit further and turn left at Main St., that route works too.)
  3. When you get to the flashing yellow/red light in Brooklyn, turn left onto Main St.
  4. Over the train tracks, you'll see an oddly laid out intersection with the cemetery on your right. Go straight/slight right around the cemetery to follow Ashe Nursery Rd. (Main St. hooks left).
  5. Follow Ashe Nursery Rd. for a while, over the Cypress Creek bridge.
  6. Just before the Ashe Lake Recreation Area, you'll see a gravel/dirt road on the left (New York Rd), possibly a sign for the Black Creek range. Turn left onto that gravel road.
  7. Follow it for ~5-10 minutes (I've never actually timed it), just over 2.5 miles, you'll eventually see the turnoff for the range on your left.

Glad I am not the only one that has done this....
