Our catering schedule is open for that date, and I will keep it open for this event if needed.

Send me a PM or ask parabellum for my number.

The United States concealed carry association'sheadquarters is not too far away from West Allis, maybe we could get the editor to the Picnic to do a story ?

Way to run with the ball Mr. Greg!

I never thought Trowbridge School was that close to South Shore Park. The south end of the park might have worked, but you are right to err on the side of caution. Unfortunately, I will be working that day, I'll be with you in spirit.

My understanding is county parks are under the jurisdiction of the Sheriffs Department so any LEO encounters will most likely be Deputy Sheriffs. If that's a good thing or bad thing? :? That doesn't mean local PD can't respond to a park but they usually default to the the county boys. For those who don't OC a weapon, OC a video camera.

A good time to all who attend! :celebrate

Color me there!

As the date gets closer, we should have a good idea of needs for food, etc.

I have posted this at another thread, but good to watch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY8XxVmSpCQ

It's an ABC Nightline report on an OC picnic in VA. All the people are friendly, just having a good time. The reporter seems surprised that nobody is doing quick draws, unholstering to compare weapons, etc. I am certainly not trying to preach to the choir, but if this gets as big as it seems it may, we will be under the microscope, and our behavior will be scrutinized.

I think the antigun media here will be surprised that the people who will be in attendance are not kook gun nuts, but decent, respectable citizens who care about their rights and their protection. O.K., I'm "assuming" here because I've not met any of you. However, after reading these threads for some time now, I am sure that my assumption is safe.

Best wishes to all.

Yeah, like I said, the reservable picnic areas at South Shore are on the South end of the park...but it'd be a close shave. People would literally have to park, walk to the picnic area, THEN uncase and holster their firearms, and repeat in reverse when leaving the park. That's too flaky for me.

Here's what my Patented Google Maps 1000 Feet CopyPaste Wheel looks like at the furthest corner of Trowbridge School:

1000feet_southshorepark_sat.jpg

Those Picnic areas are dangerously close to that borderline, and keep in mind, Google Maps may not be the most precise measuring tool.

[Edited the pic to add in red dots where the two rentable picnic areas are]

Keep in mind that the 1000' rule is to the edge of the school property, not the middle, as you are showing.

FYI.

948.605 Gun−free school zones. (1) DEFINITIONS. In this
section:
(a) “Encased” has the meaning given in s. 167.31 (1) (b).
(ac) “Firearm” does not include any beebee or pellet−firing
gun that expels a projectile through the force of air pressure or any
starter pistol.
(am) “Motor vehicle” has the meaning given in s. 340.01 (35).
(b) “School” has the meaning given in s. 948.61 (1) (b).
(c) “School zone” means any of the following:
1. In or on the grounds of a school.
2. Within 1,000 feet from the grounds of a school.
(2) POSSESSION OF FIREARM IN SCHOOL ZONE. (a) Any individual
who knowingly possesses a firearm at a place that the individual
knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone is
guilty of a Class I felony.
(b) Paragraph (a) does not apply to the possession of a firearm:
1. On private property not part of school grounds;
2. If the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so
by a political subdivision of the state or bureau of alcohol, tobacco
and firearms in which political subdivision the school zone is
located, and the law of the political subdivision requires that,
before an individual may obtain such a license, the law enforcement
authorities of the political subdivision must verify that the
individual is qualified under law to receive the license;
3. That is not loaded and is:
a. Encased; or
b. In a locked firearms rack that is on a motor vehicle;
4. By an individual for use in a program approved by a school
in the school zone;
5. By an individual in accordance with a contract entered into
between a school in the school zone and the individual or an
employer of the individual;
6. By a law enforcement officer acting in his or her official
capacity; or
7. That is unloaded and is possessed by an individual while
traversing school grounds for the purpose of gaining access to
public or private lands open to hunting, if the entry on school
grounds is authorized by school authorities.
8. By a person who is legally hunting in a school forest if the
school board has decided that hunting may be allowed in the
school forest under s. 120.13 (38).
Ugh, someone who lives within 1000 feet of a school can't OC to walk their dog at night. An LEO or over zealous DA, and the person is facing a felony...

Even if we had a 100% gun-friendly legislature and governor, it would tak years to sort out all of the inconsistencies and unconstitutionalities in WI laws. :banghead:

How do you make that radius thing on Google Maps? I think we're ALL going to need it, not just for planning OC picknics.

I wonder has anyone ever been charged with this in WI? Even the low-lifes in Milwaukee's inner city who've engaged in intentional felonious gun-play in, on, and around schools?

That was the edge. The center of the circle still has Google's "1000 Feet" text going around in a circle, so it's hard to see, but the center of the circle in that map is at the SE edge of the school's parking lot.

I made it by using Adobe Photoshop, and making a circle of Google Map's 1000 Feet length scale ruler indicator thingamajig. When I get time (After finals this semester), I'll see about making maps of cities in WI and marking off the school zones.

I just registered on here for this thread alone,

same name over on THR and WisconsinShooters.

I and my wife (maybe my father and step-mother) will be there.

Now I just have to let the missus know that we have to make a large amount of beef jerky.

Ahh, don't put yourself out. I thought it was some unknown function in google maps and was thinking I was an idiot for not knowing how to do it. :p

I am currently making plans to come down from Green Bay and will hopefully be accompanied by others. As of today, we are not scheduled to run the holiday. This could change as the day gets closer...

I would be interested. I have a question and an suggestion.

The question is concerning alcohol. Am I correct in assuming everyone will be sober and no alcohol will be consumed or present at this event?

The suggestion is that we do not remove our weapons from their holsters during this event. The only time they would not be holstered is moving them to and from the case. At no other time are we to remove them from our holsters.

The last thing I want to see is someone getting hurt.

Yeah...keeping everything in the holsters is a good idea, especially if there are any news personel there, to show that we are all responsible and safe people.

always a good idea to keep things holstered unless there is a life/death situation.

Absolutely sober, NO alcohol. If this goes ahead as planned, you can bet that every single person in the state will be watching us eat chips and hot dogs on the 10PM news. We don't need them seeing any alcohol there, especially if children are present.

Also, a very good suggestion, and definitely a rule we will make mandatory. The point we will be stressing with this picnic is that, while we are openly carrying, we're doing so in a manner that does not supercede any other activity. The guns on our hip are not the activity we're engaging in, the picnic is. Seeing people like us go about a family-friendly event such as a picnic with guns on our hips is flat out POISON to those opposed to us, because we're advertising the notion that openly carrying a firearm does not cause us to become different people.

Updated the original post with rules (Feel free to suggest more) and an updated guest list.

I'll be honest; I'm surprised some of the regular posters around here haven't come out and pledged their support and attendance to this event. I'm sure they have their reasons, and I'd love to hear them, no matter what they may be.

Yes, I agree..I hate rules, but we all need to practice SAFETY& be Responsible , because the eyes of Wisconsin will be upon us ( police, media& our liberal law makers ) like you said we are all mature adults, but atthis event we must all shine.

1. No Alcohol

2. No unholstering of weapons

otherwise let's all Be safe, eat alot& have fun.
