This may be bigger than just my area, from a couple of stories from other regions I dug up this morning. It would appear--granted, from what seems like tight-lipped corporate spokepersons quoted--that the company no longer wants to run the restaurants themselves, in favor of making them all franchises. The trouble appears to be, they don't have many potential franchisees already lined up, or even interested. My understanding is that managers were contacted yesterday at 5pm, with orders from headquarters to shut down the restaurants by 8pm. That seems to be a frequent occurrence in the restaurant industry.

I didn't post links because the stories were rather low on details. If anybody here has a good source of info, please feel free to share it. Meanwhile, I am going to miss the Steak 'n' Shake nearest my home very much. Never saw it or others within the region posted against carry, whether CC or OC. Can't remember any such negative encounters mentioned on the Ohio-based firearms rights groups' pages or forums, either.

Of course they want to make them franchises, McDonald's makes billions of this scheme. Lease the property, lease the name, not including the cost of proprietary stock that the owners must buy. McDonald's is without the expense of paying money associated with personal. Plus the contracts force the owners to still be subservient to the company. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

Thoroughly enjoyed my recent visit to the establishment in SW OH while engaging in conversations with a couple scofflaw OC’ers from the area. We musta sat for a couple hours chatting w/no customers nor staff batting an eye nor raising an eyebrow!

Tho note to self...shakes are huge but delightfully delicious...

Per every story I have read on the subject, several (nowhere near all) stores have been temporarily closed as the corporation seeks to franchise them. My local Steak’n’Shake (Beavercreek, OH) was open as of last night.

Good morning. I did more reading. Steak 'n' Shake must be doing these closures one region at a time (?)

In my first post I also meant to state that I feel bad for the employees, the shutdowns came with very little advanced notice.

Five of Seven Dayton area restaurants remain open, including the nearest one to me, Beavercreek.

Two have “temporarily” closed, seeking franchise buyers: Miller Lane and North Main Street.

Six in the St. Louis area closed last February. Two more closing this week. Same story, looking for franchise operators. Sucks for the employees.

Tom Murray, Steak ‘n Shake CFO of franchising, said the company’s goal is to reopen shops with franchise partners. The ultimate goal is to put franchise partners in all 400 stores nationwide.
“A prospect would pay an initial franchise fee, go through a rigorous training program for four to six months, and then achieve gold standard status becoming an owner,” he said.
