Just thought I would relay this story of , well not so much police harassment, but of a very young officer trying to do his job.
A few days after Christmas I was in Sportsman's, Well they have a policy that your weapon must be checked at the front desk. You show them it is unloaded and they give the sticker of the day to stick to it. (My mag goes in my pocket) I was in the reloading section with a gift card my wife gave me that was trying it's best to burn though my pocket, and a young officer walks up to me. I thought "Jeez here comes another rookie that wants to know why I am carrying a sidearm" He walks up to me and looks me in the eye and said:"Sir I am sorry to bother you, but that gentleman asked me to ask you why you are carrying a firearm?" Standing a few yards behind the cop is a "gentleman" trying to push his kid behind him looking like he was about to well he looked like he was going to lose bladder control in his twill trousers. I wanted to go on a tirade about , It's my 2nd amendment right and my right as a citizen of New Mexico etc etc. But looking at this young officer, (He looked like he should be playing basketball with my teenager at Moriarty High) and the almost pained look, I told him, "Sir there are about 1100 officers in Albuquerque and about 700,000 people. My carrying my sidearm means that there is one less person for you to worry about and are now able to focus your attention on those that are unable or unwilling to defend themselves" I said this looking at the "man" who asked the cop to ask me....well you get the idea on that. "Plus as a citizen of New Mexico I choose to carry openly rather than concealed since I do not need to ask permission of the state to do so, unlike if I had the permits to carry concealed." the young officer looked at me and I saw the struggle for control, but the slight grin that escaped betrayed him. He said, "That is about the best I have heard in a while, sorry to bother you sir." And he left and proceeded to explain the law in New Mexico to this other "gentleman". The officer asking me why I was carrying didn't pi$$ me off as it does sometimes, it was the spineless SOB that sicced the cop on me! Of all the nerve mostly while I was in the largest gun store in the state!! Well Now that I look at it it was real funny. My 15, 9 and 6 year old sons thought it was REAL funny, but what do you expect for kids raised out in the high prairies of New Mexico!!.

What I wanted to say to that person (Not the officer) was a quote by John Conner, He writes a piece called Gun Crank Diaries:

So,” queried Snidely Snotworth III, lookin’ down his un-busted but needed-bustin’ nose, “Why do you think you have to carry a gun?”
Well,” bellowed the Brutish Neanderthal (that would be me): “Because you’re not QUALIFIED to carry one. You haven’t got the skills, the judgment, the sense of responsibility, or the courage for it.” Gun Crank Diaries, American Handgunner July/August 2005
As usual I think of the smart things to say AFTER I have managed to not put my size 11 in my mouth. But this to me is a showing of what we, as the males who are supposed to be the dominant species of this planet is coming to. Between Oprah,Ellen, Jerry, Dr Phil, Low fat, Low Carb, Low taste compressed wheatgerm and beetle dung crackers, I must sit to pee, we have been emasculated!!, Well some men have. Oops going off on a rant, The wife just walked in my office and asked if I could pick my knuckles off the ground to go get some wood for the fire. Then she gives me a kiss and says" My good caveman". At least she understands and appreciates me!!! Now off to get that wood.

See ya

Enemies may come into our country and times will have changed, but then the boys will come down from the old high hills and belt on their guns again.

Well said Sir, well said!

I seem to get defensive (oh no, not again) when asked why I am wearing a gun. I usually answer short and to the point. It's only afterwards that I realize Imissed an opportunity to educate someone and may have actually alienated them.:banghead:

I have to remember that it's not us verses them. It's about getting them to become one of us.
