South Carolina still does not allow the open carry of handguns

Which amazes me as I believe they have less Yankees there than we do here. And no offense to VA, but it is full of Yankees, and they have better carry laws.
Being of the country class, we long time country folk have little need to carry out in the country. Though, I am more often in the city to visit friends and family who moved uptown, unlike my country kinfolk who avoid the city where they can.

No, certainly in the Tri-county and Columbia, there are so many from-off and Yankees (mostly from Ohio) that the good ol' boys are almost invisible. That's much of why I left Charleston after thirty years, and we lived first on a remote Island behind a gate, and later in a walled compound with a manned gate. It was here, in the walled and guarded condominium's commons (five blocks from Emmanuel AME on Calhoun Street), that I held the Legislative action training seminars for GRGRSC.

The Defender newsletter archives are/were recently still available with the details.
Ah Calhoun St....edge of the hood...used to be anyway. I've been told, by more than a few of my S.O.B[SUP]1[/SUP] relatives that there is a reason Mr. Calhoun faces south...

+1 and good find.

The Country Class - ... Even when members of the country class happen to be government officials or officers of major corporations, their concerns are essentially private; in their view, government owes to its people equal treatment rather than action to correct what anyone perceives as imbalance or grievance. Hence they tend to oppose special treatment, whether for corporations or for social categories. Rather than gaming government regulations, they try to stay as far from them as possible. Thus the Supreme Court's 2005 decision in Kelo, which allows the private property of some to be taken by others with better connections to government, reminded the country class that government is not its friend.
Thanks for the link.

A member of OCDO who's location shows them as living in SC and is actively posting in OCDO's SC subform. I'm in CA and ALL of the other posters in this thread do NOT even live in SC (Mike: VA; Nightmare: WI; The Truth: VA; solus: NC; and Walking wolf: NC). Since there's really no active SC members in OCDO's SC subform, posting in it to encourage them to push for OC is pointless and a waste of my ever limited time and effort.

As I wrote to you previously,

Being in CA (aka "The People's Republik of Mexifornia"), I can sympathize....

Just want to add to this... I've been in VA for about 7 years of my adult life. I lived in SC for around 21 years including being raised there, so a part of me will always feel the need to rally the troops in the Palmetto State.

After experiencing some semblance of freedom in VA I have come to realize how oppressed (but complacent) the fine people of SC have become.

Open Carry in South Carolina

Afternoon all

Well, I guess I now need to take credit for moving to the OC non friendly state as one of its newest residents. I have actually owned a home in the Columbia SC area since 2004, but have moved with the military since then until I finally got a transfer to Ft. Jackson. I loved my time in North Carolina with the ability to strap on a sidearm and not worry about the need to wear specific clothing to hide the firearm from all those panic stricken South Carolinians.

So, with that I pledge to try to get involved in any way I can to push for our local government to grow up and accept the fact that a firearm is no more deadly if displayed out in the open than it is when hidden from little children and old ladies (and most democrats).

On information and belief, there is no open carry advocacy active in South Carolina. All gun advocacy in SC is by affiliates of the national organization that sells privileges for permittees. Reviews the scfirearms.org web site to find the people that will have the current status.

There will never be legal regular open carry in South Carolina until the NRA hegemony is broken.

I noted in another thread that one of the main obstacles to both permitless and open carry, Larry Martin, was voted out. Perhaps this will get things moving on the OC front.

Kindly pardon my ignorance: What are FUDDs?

"The Fudd (named after the cartoon character Elmer Fudd) is the type of person who believes that guns only have a place in a certain role, usually field hunting, and disregard everyone else's rights to own them based upon the founding principles of the Constitution on this bias."

There is a way for us to open carry without carrying rifles slung across our backs. I've studied this, discussed it with 2 SC criminal defense attorneys, and the sheriff's office. All 3 of them agree that it is perfectly legal.

We all know open carry of handguns is illegal, as well as any "concealable weapon". Carrying rifles is not restricted. It would make sense that an OC movement would look to rifles, but they aren't practical to carry all day, every day. What we should look at is an "in between" firearm. My research has led me to conclude that short barrel rifles, particularly those that are machinepistol-based or ultracompact carbine-based, would be the ideal firearms for open carry in SC. I chose the example of the Kel-Tec CMR-30 as the basis for my questions. Because of its practical similarity to the HK MP-7 (size, small caliber, mag well in pistol grip, etc), which is carried in a dropleg holster by German police but may be fired like a pistol or like a rifle with stock extended, I could see how an ordinary citizen might SBR a CMR-30 and carry it in a similar fashion. Because it is a rifle, it would be legal to open carry. Here's a few thoughts on why:

1) The weapon began life as a rifle under the GCA
2) The weapon in current format is still a rifle, but under the NFA
3) The legal status as a rifle is affirmed by the Form 1 (a copy of which should be carried with it for legal protection)
4) The weapon's legality under SC law can reasonably be assumed by possession of a Form 1, as SC law conforms to the NFA, and under 41P only CLEO notification is required, therefore CLEO notification can be documented and confirmed
5) The weapon is large enough that it is "greater than 12" along its greatest dimension" per SC statutory definition of a concealable weapon, and therefore can clearly be determined to NOT be concealable by any competent LEO

What are your thoughts?

South Carolina open carry legislative status

Afternoon all

I have looked through the news articles regarding SC constitutional carry. Everything seems to have died in April 2017. I know there is a means of checking legislative progress through the SC legislative link. I have never been successful with getting an account without errors.

If anyone has an updated SC constitutional carry please feel free to send my way.

If SC wants OC they are going to have to do what OCT did, since they can't carry any firearms open that means OCing empty holsters or bananas. Depending on the laws there may be other options to get attention, what is the law on OCing tasers? If there legal I would carry a taser, with a permit a concealed handgun.

From what I gather it is legal to carry a stun gun in SC open, or concealed without a permit. The pulse can be purchased for more, or less $400, not only is it a viable self defense tool for 15 ft, and under it would be a way to exercise first amendment rights in hope of changing the restriction on second amendment rights.

What worked in Texas and other states will not work in SC. I know, FUDDS infest SC. My family is infested with FUDDS. A brief review of the laws will show that I may OC just about every day if I am going to, or from, "a hunt." Not a single fella I know, and I know hundreds, will OC a pistol to or from a hunt because they feel no need to OC a pistol when a shotgun is in the passenger seat.

Why use a pistol when a shotgun is more effective and legal regardless of the day or time of year. SC has a long history with citizens having a gun in their possession. A pistol is not the first choice out in the swamp and criminals know a armed citizen because of the mud on the truck.

Reasonable in all situations? No, but where and when I walk through the swamps of the low country I have had my P90 (wild hogs) while hunting and no sheriff or local cop has ever asked other than what the hell kinda pistol is that when I walk into, or out of, a Piggly Wiggly/IGA with a few bags of ice to go into my cooler in the bed of my truck.

It is not the P4P (CC Industrial Complex) it is the "who needs a pistol when a shotgun does a better job" crowd that needs to be persuaded.
