If one wants to make sure to have ammo available one buys military cartridges used by the major powers.

Then more so from the winning side.

At one time 7.62x39, 8x57, 303brit. were hard to get along with others. Lessor know military cartridges even more so.

A lot of what were popular cartridges calibers are hard to find even fairly knew ones.

Now most short mag cartridges are hard to find.

I tell every body if you buy a new rifle in a new cartridge make sure you buy enough ammo and or brass to last more then your life time.

So... If I buy a $700 bolt-action rifle then you want me to buy several thousand dollars of ammunition?

It would be cheaper for me to buy a new rifle!

Tell you what I'm going to do instead...

I'm going to buy either a 30-06 or a .308 as I mentioned for two reasons: Lots of guns and Lots of ammunition suppliers.

Having checked prices, I see everyone's going with 30-06, probably due to its higher velocity and flatter trajectory.

Having shot 300 yards with both, I'm confident I can adjust for wind and elevation using the clock method and range formula to find minute of angle and adjusting for temperature and humidity. After all, 20 degrees above calibrated results in an additional 50 fps at the muzzle, right? :)
