Not only have I heard that, I've talked myself nearly blue in the face trying to convince the misguided friend that he was mistaken. It's amazing how much credence folks give to the odd ignorant LEO.Love to hear the story behind that one!

The problem is that too many people consider, "Deputy Billy Bob from Po-Dunk County said so!" to be a valid cite...Oh ya, that one has made the rounds before.
Ask them to provide you with a cite (statute or case law) - better yet bet them a steak dinner for two.

Two friends talking around the water cooler and the subject came up. I told him that his information was not accurate and that in VA we can open carry as long as you can legally do so and not in areas restricted by law. I think he just learned something then.Love to hear the story behind that one!
He acknowledged my response and said he did not know that. Some people get it, some don't. Go figure huh?

I get them all the time. I just remind them that first I am not a lawyer but there are places you can go to research their inquiry and ask questions to better understand the laws where they live. Assumption is the mother of all screw ups.

Hope that this isn't considered a duplicate post... but this would seem to be the proper thread (rather than NoVA OC):
I heard an NRA Certified Instructor tell a class that having a CHP means that you can't carry more than one handgun at a time because it's a Concealed Handgun Permit, not a Concealed HandgunS permit. We already know this to be incorrect.
He also told the class that the possession of a CHP is tied to the license plate database and as soon as the officer runs your place, they know if you have a CHP. This is not as cut-and-dried wrong as the first statement, but I think we have yet to get a clear understanding of when/how an officer becomes aware of CHP possession without us telling them. The instructor also opined that CHP holders (or those carrying legally in the car without a CHP) immediately inform the officer of that fact -- as a matter of courtesy and safety. The instructor tied that back to the earlier statement that the officer knows about the CHP as soon as they stop the car, so they are expecting the driver to 'fess up and it will sour their attitude if the driver does not immediately inform him. Can we get a definite, informed statement from anyone as to what the CHP record is tied to in any of the Commonwealth's databases, DMV or otherwise?

I can't find it right now James, but a year ago we ha a member who is a dispatcher, explain it. It is a service that some departments subscribe to but not all.
So no, it doesn't come up in all venues.

Funny, I had an old man in Wendys tell me the same thing. He seemed to think that you needed a CHP to carry and if you had a CHP, you could carry but it had to be concealed.
We discussed it for a few minutes and he acquiesced that his thought was not logical and he appreciated when I gave him my last carry flyer/handout with the legal reference.

I listen to my dispatcher work traffic stops all day. About once a day I'll hear, "ABC-123 returns to John Doe of Richmond, blue Cadillac, no warrants, HAS A CHP." As a former old timey dispatcher, I'm pretty sure this info comes in automatically through the NCIC/VCIN. Those agencies have the option to suspend participation for certain reasons, but they are the gold and only standard for running license plates.

That would seem to be pretty definitive ... so if I'm driving my wife's car (in which I have no ownership) then the officer will not know that I have a CHP ... unless and until he runs my DL ... yes? And if my wife is driving my car (in which she has no ownership interest), then the officer will think she has a CHP? Seems like a fairly ambiguous situation...

Had a kid tell me he can take my gun when i was at the park having lunch with my girlfriend. I just looked at him and said you will have a very bad day if you try kid. I don't understand kids nowadays...
