Since it was such a nice evening me and the fiancee went up the drive tonight. I got to carry last year during the short window of opportunity but this was my first real visit under the new rule. Gotta say it did feel good to get out and walk around and not have to disarm.

Info to report, the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center is posted, however the restrooms are not, being totally separate buildings I take they are not banned from carry. Saw a herd of whitetails that as is typical in national parks are totally unafraid of people. Despite the antis warnings to the contrary I was able to resist poaching them, how about that?

Did you notice if you caused wide spread panic among your fellow park visitors, or ruin the serenity of the park?

I do not believe serenity was ruined, however I was casually concealing not OCing. Casual concealment means I wasn't really trying hard to conceal my Glock, if my shirt rode up I wasn't going to lose sleep over it. Someone might have seen my gun last night or not. I think I was about as obvious as one can be and still be concealing (5.11 shirt and pants, VCDL hat, service sized pistol bulge on my hip. :D)

Did not see a single government employee either, the Front Royal gate was open and unmanned and no rangers in sight the entire time we were up there.

Open carried on skyline drive no problem. Park ranger was very polite and well informed on the change of law and national park carry. Had to help her out on state carry laws a bit. We talked about gun rights and how we thought the laws would affect the general population. She was a little worried at first. After we spoke for a moment she calmed down and we spoke for a half hour. Overall very good interaction

1. That no permit was needed to open carry.

2. Was unaware that open carry of longgunswas legal.

3. Preemption as a whole.
4. Car carry without a permit.

Those are the ones I remember. Will post a pic of me that was taken on skyline drive.

Still waiting on that bag of doughnuts :D:lol:

I would say she was very poorly schooled on her job then, not "well informed."

Did she take your word for it or did you have documentation with you?

Either way it is unusual for an officer to accept correction by a citizen.

She wasa park Ranger unarmed and very polite.Told her most laws about this would be covered under 18.2-308. She said she would check It out. She gave me the impression that the info that was given to her was crappy at best. It was a very pleasant conversation. Wouldn't really say I corrected her I didn't mean it that way and she didn't take it that way. She also told me that all Rangers had to qualify but cant carry unless they are on a law enforcement detail. Overall She seemed happy to have spoke with me.

OC'd while hiking on Old Rag this weekend. No  or anything like that. Everyone was polite. A fairly large group of guys who didn't look like boyscouts did take notice, but nothing beyond that ;)

It's nice to have the option to either oc or cc and not have to worry about breaking the law(restaurant carry excluded until July 1 of course)
