Sheriff's deputy mistakenly fires eight shots at robbery victim, misses

WEST HOLLYWOOD -- A sheriff's deputy fired eight shots at a man he believed to have just robbed a West Hollywood liquor store early Sunday, but his target turned out to be the just-robbed clerk, and the actual suspects got away.

The deputy-involved shooting occurred around 2 a.m. near Havenhurst Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard, said Deputy Lillian Peck of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

“Deputies responded to a robbery call of a liquor store in the 8200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard,'' Peck said. “The call indicated the suspects were armed with a handgun.''

Peck said one of the deputies “saw a man matching one of the suspects' description run from the area of the liquor store, holding what he believed to be a gun, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.'' The man was not hit.

“The man was detained by deputies and was determined not to be a suspect,'' Peck said.

Lt. Alicia Ault told the WeHo News website a single deputy fired eight rounds at the man, who turned out to be the store clerk.

“The deputy fired eight rounds and missed him,'' Ault told WeHo News. “Ultimately, deputies determined that the man the deputy fired upon was the store's clerk who was pointing to them trying to get their attention.''

The two suspects were described only as a black man armed with a handgun and a black woman. Both suspects were last seen running southbound on Havenhurst Drive.

Windows at a store across the street from the robbery site were blown out by the gunfire.

This IS the point. We are asking a HUMAN to respond to a scene where DEATH is ready to strike. I am upset about what happend BUT it's OUR fault!!

The way I see it a civilian with a gun would have been a better solution. An armed civilian (A) would have been on scene to see the crime. (B) would have a much faster response time. (C) and statistically speaking would have had more gun training*. It is our job to protect and serve each other. And untill we change this reckless path back to that direction it will only get worse.

Translation: Cop saw something in the dark and started shooting. He missed 8 times. And this after hundreds of hours training.

Its my opinion that open carriers have more knowledge and experience with firearms and with shooting. I have seen too many videos of police doing e checks where they dont even know how to operate the handgun. This is a clear safety concern.

What brand/type? Price doesn't matter--- AS THE AMMO KNEW IMMEDIATELY THAT THE PERSON THE AMMO WAS SENT TOWARD WAS INNOCENT AND THEREFORE ALTERED THEIR TRAJECTORY TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT.

I think this is ammunition we should all have and want-- NO MATTER THE COST!

On a similar note I read (this happened years ago so I don't have a link) an article in the Sac Bee that Sacramento PD (most likely swat) raided a local house where shots were fired. They shot 22 rounds or more and struck the subject only three times. Now albeit this was a totally different situation, but would you trust your life to a single police officer in this area if multiple ones cannot hit the target?

Were I not trained and practiced, I would hazard a guess that the officer had his eyes closed. However, since he's had "100's of hours of training" he should have been able to at least get one round on target with his eyes closed. I know I can do 10 of 10 at 5 yards, 8 of 10 at 10 yards, and 5 of 10 at 15 yards into a doorway sized target (and not use the whole darn thing) WITH MY FREAKIN EYES CLOSED, while facing 90 degrees to the target, strong side towards the target.....draw point squeeze (repeat last step 10 times).

Usually this is demonstrated to people who seem to think you have to be facing the assailant in a weaver stance before you can return fire.

Now that I have my FN 5.7 I think I'll go try this with the 21 round capacity.....oh wait, it's deer season.....no recreational shooting on my range until I bag mine.......they're both (range and deer) in my back yard.

80 hours academy, then maybe 8 hrs training/qualification time* every quarter on paper. How much of that is 'on task' is debatable. Very little to none is practical high stress combat style training.

Some barely qualify, most are mediocre... Some of us like shooting and do seek training out side of work.
