Sheridan Police harass gun rights activist, terrorize his family during swat style confrontation

...It was Sunday after spending the weekend in Sheridan for the local Tea Party, we were leaving the hotel to head back home, while driving only 100 yards away, there were two police officers coming up the hill on foot carrying AR-15 rifles....

The City of Sheridan web-site says:they havebeen voted #1 Western Town of the Year for its truly special qualities…“Enjoy a frontier spirit that values friendship – and independence”, really? NOT SO MUCH!

Area Citizens shouldcall and tell them you don’t appreciate this kind of treatment and expect more from the police officers that work for “we the people”.

Tourists- call them and tell them you will skip Sheridan, tourism dollars will be spent elsewhere.

Sheridan City Hall (307) 674-6483

Gun owners planning on visiting Wyoming-
Call the Governor’s office and tell him in this tight economy you don’t have to visit Wyoming.
Tell him Wyoming is the last place you expect to be harassed about firearms!
His number is: (307) 777-7434

Below is the e-mail message I sent to the city mayor;

Dear mayor:

It has come to my attention that police officers of your city have stopped and given citizens who are legally armed with a handgun a difficult time. Some reports even indicate that your city officers use threats and intimidation against citizens who are exercising their legal right to arm themselves for personal protection. I find this unacceptable behavior. I live in South Dakota and travel across Wyoming on a regular basis and always carry a handgun for personal protection.

Unless this matter is taken care of and your local police officers are educated in the laws of their own state I will avoid doing business in your fine city and totally circumvent your city during my travels. I will take my meals, purchase my gas and stay at hotels in firearm friendly towns.

What is amazing is that as a resident of another state I seem to know Wyoming law better than your own professional law enforcement officers who are paid to know and enforce the law. That indeed is a sad state of affairs. It seems that this anti gun attitude may even extend higher into the city prosecutors office. Something you may want to look into.

Sincerely, a law abiding citizen willing to take the responsibility for self-protection as well as the safety of others if necessary. Your police officers should realize that those of us who legally arm ourselves are actually willing to come to their aid and assistance if necessary. We are not the enemy.

There isanother response that gun owners can try. Return to Sheridan and be better armed than the government agents that carried AR-15s. Let them know that you are NOT intimidated.

This does not happen in Wyoming!

This is unacceptable!

If it were: Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, or maybe even California, then, I could understand. However, in Wyoming?.....

Unacceptable!

Sheridan is not above the Law!

I find the actions, or I should say, inactions that followed the detention to be even more disturbing than that initial contact. It sounds like a good old fashioned Latin American dictatorship is going on in that town.
