In no particular order within the past seven days:

Target, Menards, Meijer, taco bell, walmart, Columbia Gyros, hollywood video, little ceasers, several gas stations (speed way has 79 cent any size slushies again!), Cabelas... couple more places I can't think of right now.

Not a single incident. All positive.

I'll have to keep this list for when I have the gun and the license. All that is in my area.

I used to sellInsurance to the Gary Fire Dept stations back in the early 90's. The station Commanders had no problem with me carrying concealed when I visited them but I never did OC in Gary. I don't want to push my luck in Gary.

At the walmart near my home in FT. Wayne, there were some sherifs there handing out stuff for kids. Mainly dna kits for the parents to fill out and save in there fridgerators incase of a emergency, and stickers and coloring books.

I struck up a conversation, and as i do with all cops i convers with, i ask the open carry question. This group of deputies was really nice, but they didnt know for sure if oc was legal. They said that it is better to conceal anyways, for basicly all the reasons that anti oc'ers give, some of the points they stressed were as follows.

1. Your target number one.

2. It will scare the people. This one had some emphasis to it.

Now they also stressed one other point I hadnt heard from the anti oc crowd before. that someone who is new to carrying a firearm, and is concealing, may get the wrong impression and shoot you.

They told how they had seen fellow officers tackle guys on the street becuase they have seen there weapons and had arrested them.

This kind of lack of understanding of the law, is disheartening. The type of things i heard from these officers, is why i dont oc more often.Heck at first the officersaid it was down right illegal, then as we conversed admitted he didnt know. Ill do it as part of a group outing, but im still shakey about doing it solo.

Now dont missunderstand them as being rude or JBT's, they wernt. They were nice and polite the whole time we were talking. They were glad of the supreme courts ruling and supported our right to carry a firearm.

As a side note, one of the officers mentioned the training program they recently attended from there department. he stated that at the end of the training that the trainers the state brought in reminded them to always conceal off duty, even if they put there badge next it.

Thats why you have to make sure they understand that OC is legal. Don't be afraid to push the issue in this situation and politely have them get a definitive answer for you. Education is key and if you don't do it while having a pleasant conversation you or another OC'er could get some rough treatment until things are sorted out.

Don't shirk you responsibility's as a freeman to educate your employees.

Prometheus, I dont think they were in any position to find out anything tho bro. They wernt there guarding the place. They were there handing out Dna kits and coloring books to kids. I doubt they would have botherd, nor do i think any one of them had any intention of following up on the question seeing as they were more interested in getting the kits and books to the kids that were talking to them.

In Indiana, you must obtain a License To Carry, before you can leave your home with a handgun, open or concealed.

There are restrictions where you can carry.

To obtain the license, go to your local police department. If you don't live in a town, go to the Sheriff's Office.

Yes, they are. I live here, and I have to tell you that gangbangers and the high rate of crime here are both factors that have, unfortunately, contributed to a fear of guns that has, unfortunately, made life miserable for law abiding gun owners. Furthermore, it does not help that Gary is the 2nd most liberal city in America. See here:

I've read posts on this forum, mostly by OpenRyan, about open carry experiences in Gary. However, he's lucky. I live here and if you look like me (a tall black male covered with tattoos and who wears mostly baggy clothing) OC will result in a man with gun call to the police, and you will end up face down on the ground with a knee in your back and a gun to your head. My recommendation is, unless you can make yourself look like a detective, don't do it here.

I would disagree. I think the lawsuit for civil rights violation would be worth the trouble of being detained. Go for it!

As a matter of fact, since I live a short distance away in Michigan City, we should go hang out together at a donut shop.

I wouldn't mind hanging out while OCing, just not here in Gary. Merrillville or Hammond would be better. I really don't feel like being thrown on the ground with a boot on my neck and a gun to my head just to get them to stop their harassment of law abiding gun owners. Let someone else have that done to them. As for me, no thank you!

I'm just south of you in Griffith. I carry concealed all the time, but I haven't had to into Gary. Today was actually my first time OCing. I went grocery shopping with my wife and daughter at the Highland Meijer. No problems whatsoever (wife and kid might have something to do with it).

Like tattedupboy, I don't know if its worth my time to go OCing in Gary, just to prove a point. I don't need to arrested and put through the ringer, only to go through the courts and waste more time. If you've got nothing better to do, you have my full support. i'll even chip in some money for your bail or court costs. but i'm not putting my family through all that crap.
