The Police Benevolent Association was offering the guns — including an M&P15 Sport rifle, which is Smith & Wesson's version of an AR-15 assault rifle — along with a 55-inch Samsung television set, the North Jersey Record reported.
“We understand the gravity of these weapons and the means to which they’ve been used,” Capt. Mustafa Rabboh, a spokesman for PBA Local 309, said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize to anyone we may have offended as a result of this raffle.”

Are the police that ignorant to think that an AR-15 is an “assault rifle”???

If they are going to apologize to anyone whom they offended by offering the raffle, will they apologize to everyone they left disappointed or dumbstruck at their ignorance? I’d like an apology too.

As we are all very well aware, the term "assault weapon" has no basis in fact, despite having been very ignorantly adopted and even wrongly codified by a thankfully very few but still amazingly ignorant legislatures.

The term "assault rifle," on the other hand, has a definition set in stone:

"A selective-fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine."

The AR-15 is NOT a "selective-fire rifle."

Whoever wrote the original report is wrong. I do note, however, their subsequent references to it are for a "semi-automatic rifle."

Looks to me like someone read the riot act. Probably hundreds, if not thousands.
