i applied for a CCW out of stater permit in July, and I wanted to know what the wait times are, and possibly, who to contact to inquire if it was denied or not. I left a message at the State police, but got no reply.

thanks.

The law says they must issue or deny an out of state application within 60 days. Having said that, the State Police have decided that they cannot follow this law and at last check they were at a 90 day wait time. You want to call the State Police licensing division at 207-624-7210

Any update from the OP? Did you get your permit yet or are you still waiting?

I just sent out my application for a Maine permit on 2/16/2013 and was wondering if the current wait time might be ~3 months or more like 6 months+.

Thanks.

I have not received the cpl or any kind of response so I gave up on it. I am not out all that much, and don't need it anymore.

Wow, that's not very encouraging. :( I will post back if I get mine though.

There should be no excuse for not being able to complete a permit in a couple weeks or less, even if demand is high. Florida, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire seem to have no problems. If not for the "loaded vehicle-carry" restriction, I wouldn't even bother with the Maine permit.

Thanks for replying.

Jesus that's a long time to wait! Don't give up, follow up with them. Annoy the shizz out of them until they deny/issue your CCP.

I sent in my app for a non res CHP (had not lived in ME for 5 yrs or more) around the end of Aug 2012. After two emails to Lt. Ireland (listed as the CO for the licensing Div.) near the end of Jan and again mid Feb I received a reply that my CHP had been issued and mailed out on 2/6. I'm currently out of State and after a quick call to the homestead I confirmed that my CHP had arrived.

So they're taking the better part of 5 months plus to git-er-dun if my experience is any indication.

I sent in my application for out of state permit at the end of december 2012 and noticed that they had deposited the 60 dollar check last week. Hoping that means they have processed it and I might get the permit shortly. Wont be needing it for a while but still nice to have it :D

My application arrived around January 30, 2013 and didn't begin to be processed until April 22. Check still hasn't cleared the bank either.

This is on the Maine State Police website:

"Notice to concealed handgun permit applicants: Due to the high volume of applications the Weapons Division is receiving, it may take as long as 150 days to receive your permit."

http://www.maine.gov/dps/msp/licenses/weapons_permits.html

I have not seen my check clear yet and it's been just over 2 months. I will be calling next week to see if I can get a better estimate.

Update to my previous post: check has finally been deposited, so for those keeping track:

Application received: January 30, 2013.
Application processing: April 22, 2013 (82 days, if my counting is correct)
Check Deposited: April 30, 2013 (90 days)

Well, this is somewhat encouraging, though still well beyond the statutory 60 day limit. Please let us know when you finally receive the permit.

I did call Maine State Police on Monday and I was told my name was not found in their "system" yet, so it appears they have not started to process my application. I was also told that they have a backlog of 4,200 apps. When I inquired about the 60 day limit, he said they have updated their website to state 150 days.... He went on to say that they are working hard to get them completed before 150 days and that they don't have the resources to process any faster.

I then asked if 90 days may be a bit more realistic and he said "possibly, yes." I will say the guy I spoke with was trying to be helpful and was patient with my questions. He also encouraged me to keep calling back to check on the status. I'll have to take 'em up on their offer and as suggested, "annoy them while reminding them about the law." So, FWIW - they're working as quickly as they can...:uhoh:

They can update their site to say 3 years, still doesn't change the law.

I didn't know Maine's laws were so flexible and modern. Are there other laws that have a "website exemption"? Perhaps this legislative concept should be spread to other states.

Lol this my thinking exactly.

They could put 3years on the website. Doesn't change the fact that law says 30/60 days and that they are breaking the law.

Probably no penalty for breaking it, that's why they're so brazen about it. Florida's firearms preemption law had that problem. Counties routinely passed restrictive ordinances in violation of it, and occasionally arrested people in violation of those illegal ordinances. You'd be set free, naturally, but not until you were out the attorney's fees, making it an effective harassment tactic. Eventually the legislature got fed up with it and implemented stiff fines, to be personally paid by the offending bureaucrats. They squealed loudly about how offensive it was to be subject to penalties for breaking the law. It was effective at gaining compliance, though.
