Hey, I'm in the mood to head out and do some shooting this weekend. I can't stand indoor ranges though (grew up shooting outdoors) and am curious if anyone knows of some good areas to go shooting. I could just head out to some National Forest land and walk until I find a place but if someone knows of a good place, I'd just as soon go there instead. I'm in Loveland, so anywhere in the Loveland, FC, Greeley, or surrounding area.

Any thoughts?

Just get on Rt 14 east and head out to the Pawnee Grasslands.

There are a few places where people shoot on the BLM.

You just need to make sure its not private property and none of the cows are going to get shot.

I'll get on google earth and pinpoint where I used to shoot out there.

I'll post back in a little while.

I'm in Loveland...

That's "Southeast Colorado?"

Looks like if you go west on 34, or north on 21 then 27, there are small roads all throughout the Roosevelt National Forest.

Have you visited a Forest Ranger station and asked them? I found calling them on the phone doesn't work very well, but if you walk in and give them a smile, they're much more apt to help.

I look forward to seeing this as well.

Its been about three years since I lived in CO, so make sure you check these places out first.

But I am 90% sure they are the places I used to always shoot at.

The first one is:
40°50'26.99"N
104°41'24.73"W

You shoot south of the little pond there.

Its about 100yrds of shooting.

The second place usually has someone shooting there during the day.

The backdrop is a 50' high cliff and is the safest place to shoot.

You must however make sure there are no cows wondering around.

You may have to open a gate to get in, but its legal and a public road.

Just close the gate back up after entering or leaving to keep the cows in.

I've never shot out there, but I think they've had some issues.

Here's a brochure applicable to shooting at Pawnee Grasslands:

http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5207977.pdf

One thing that caught my eye:

"On the Arapaho and Roosevelt National
Forests and Pawnee National Grassland
you may only shoot at cardboard targets,
paper targets, manufactured metallic tar-
gets (metal targets specifically designed
for firearms), or manufactured thrown-type
clay targets (clay pigeons)."

There is a closure (no idea if this an area mentioned above):

"The closure is located in Township
8 North, Range 76 West, Section 7.
The area is closed for 1/4 mile
south of Weld County Road 96
and 1/4 mile west of County Road
63."
