I just wanted to touch base with everybody and learn the best practices for activities around town. I play sports and get active three times a week or more. I skateboard and I have to disarm for that; leaving my pistol in my car. I play frisbee golf, too; and I disarm. Whether or not I take off my holster/pistol depends on the energy and movement needed. For hiking; I keep my holster and pistol on. For rock climbing; I disarm. When I get my CHP; I will be carrying To the rock wall and then just put my pistol in my backpack while I climb. I fish in the summer time, all the time; and I definitely keep my holster and pistol on. I just use a basic spinner and go for trout; nice and easy- no crazy movements.

What do you guys do? Anyone play frisbee golf too and do you disarm or not? How about mountain biking? I don't have one, yet- but do you guys carry while? Tennis- seems like you'd want to disarm; but that could depend on how tight your holster and shorts are?

Just wondering; thanks everyone. Spring is in the air!

I was running last night and had a RED moment when a car hitreverse and backed up to about where I was. The guy turned out to be looking for something back at another house.I'm not too concerned about the neighbourhood I run in, but you never know. I should carry at least pepper spray.I do want to get a belly band for such, but they're pricey.

I'm not a rock climber or a skateboarder but I also Frisbee Golf and hike and fish and so on and never disarm. I just use an appropriate holster that keeps my weapon secure and dose not flop around when being active. My Blackhawk Surpa CQC with the paddle works great for most of the activities I do and keeps my weapon secure and stable even when running. When I was in the service we couldn't put our weapons down to run, jump, crawl, climb ect. We learned how to do it armed and keep our weapons secure.

Oooo see that's what I'm talking about. I would like to keep my pistol on my persons while frisbee golfing but my basic nylon hip holster isn't going to cut it! I need to take a trip to the gun store for a new holster.

i dont skate much anymore, but i cant see how i could skate and carry at the same time. i guess if i had a small pocket pistol and a pocket holster, but it would still get in the way. plus, i was generally not welcome wherever i was skating, and sometimes cops got involved. being armed probably wouldn't have helped the situation.

frisbee golf shouldnt be too hard. it mightbe slightly annoying to have something on your hip but maybe not. sometimes i move my pistol to 4 o clock instead of 3 o clock if its getting in the way.

Yeah I wouldn't skateboard with the pistol anyway; due to the nature of the game- you're going to fall and fall hard, don't want my pistol on deck for a sack tap.

well I haven't yet, but I'm getting convinced to frisbee golf with my pistol strapped.

I just upgraded from nylon (Uncle Mikes Ambi-Hip) to a paddle retention. It makes all the difference in the world in terms of flopping around. MUCH more secure.

I love disc golf. I was thinking of bringing my discs when I am out there next week. What is your favorite course?

I play at mainly 3 local courses. There's a disc course at Highway 285 and Kipling, enter along the frontage road called Hampden; can't miss it viewing from Google Maps.

There's a very very short course called "The Postage Stamp" or Ken Caryl course; this is located near the intersection of S Continental Divide and Ken Caryl Ave, going South on S Continental Divide, course is on the left at the Clubhouse. Very nice because we are talking all Par 2 and only one Par 3.

Arvada has a pretty nice setup at 58th, just behind the Municipal building; can't miss it. A small stream runs through the course; to wide to jump across, but shallow enough to retrieve your discs. During run-off; you will probably loose a disc or two as the water level raises several feet.

Outside of those three; there's a really nice disc golf park in Conifer that is covered in snow right now and will be for a while. It's probably my favorite course if I am going to make a day of it. Beautiful view and not busy at all.

The Arvada park is the most busiest out of the four.

Whether or not I carry has a lot to do with where I'm am, the time of day, and what crime stats seem to indicate are target-prone environments. Thus, I carry:

1. Everywhere between the hours of 10pm and sunrise.

2. At all gas stations/food marts.

3. At all ATMs.

4. At my bank (they don't seem to mind it).

5. At all other times unless the situation deems it prudent for me to leave it in my vehicle or at home.

6. Anytime while hiking alone.

7. Occasionally if I'm hiking with others who won't freak out (even big animals avoid crowds of humans).

Where I do NOT carry:

1. While swimming , especially while wearing goggles. :what:

2. Anytime I'll be consuming any alcoholic beverage, no matter how slight the amount.

3. Anytime where I'll be in the company of others who're consuming alcoholic beverages to any significant extent (the last thing I need is to get into a bar fight simply because I am carrying and some drunken fool uses that as an excuse to allow the alcohol to go to his/her head). Caveat, if I'll not be consuming myself and will only be there a short time and have a concealed holster, I'll carry concealed, weather permitting.

4. Anytime where I have to trust someone else's lock to secure my weapon (the gym, unless I can put my own lock on the locker).

5. Any other location where it's prohibited (posted by the property owner, in the courthouse, open carrying in Denver or Denver county, etc.)

6. I leave it at home any time I'm travelling on base.

So, bottom line, I carry most places and times where doing so will cause few problems than it'll solve, and I refrain from carrying in situations not statistically likely to be targets for criminal activity where it's prohibited, and when it's prudent not to be carrying a firearm (crowded bar full of drunks).

Hey, Bomber, cscitney87 - I used to play ultimate alot, but have played frisbee golf only once. I'd love to get together and play 9 or 18holes, carrying or no. :)

Going out today in the afternoon and I go out most days the weather permits. I just HATE going alone- and all my friends work all day- so I welcome the company.

Does anyone carry anything besides a gun while hiking? I consider most handguns, actually pretty much all, as a back up to bear spray and/or an airhorn. I.e. if I'm downwind. I don't trust a handgun as a primary weapon to anything big enough to not be afraid of me.

Air horn is a good idea. You could sing, loudly, a tune to yourself or amongst your group; this will allow any large predators to hear you before they see you- they will vacate the area.

I can hog hollar louder than most airhorns. :)

As for bear spray, I'm all for it's non-lethal approach, but do not trust the fact that the bear must be within a2 second charge distance (about 25 feet) before it can be used. Long before I'll ever knowingly let a bear get that close I'll have used other means of deterrence.

My uncle was a foreman on a ranch here in Colorado for several years, and would usually carry while out on the grounds alone. On occasion he'd run into a bear and would simply fire a round or two off to the side, into the woods or a dirt berm, and that was almost always enough to give the bear pause for thought (i.e. change his mind) about approaching this very loudly barking upright critter.

The benefit is two-fold: First, you're ready to drop the bear without fumbling with a can of mace if the bear makes a hurried decision to take a closer inspection. Second, you don't risk discovering what the effects of mild chem warfare feels like in case the wind shifts, which isn't at all uncommon here in Colorado. Or worse, you hit the bear in the face, it's pissed, mauls your face, and now you're sporting a mauled face inflamed with bear drool and mace.

I think the point of order here that switching from your primary to your backup weapon during a two-second charge isn't likely to be a very successful one.

Proper choice of ammo in your pistol is key! A hollow point is not going to get much past fur, thick tough skin, muscle and bone in big game..45acp FMJ +P rounds of my own making is my choice for big game defense.

Sent an email to the only contact available for Beaver Ranch; Conifer Community Park. I haven't had an email back yet. I sent the email Friday afternoon; so maybe by the end of today (Monday) I will get a reply.

I went up to the park on Saturday and there are NO firearms notices posted anywhere. No mention of firearms at all. There are several big signs warning of big cats, bears, and coyotes!

To comment; the disc golf course is in great shape. The tees all have picture signs posted; no spray paint or obscenities. The baskets are all in REALLY good shape. They are the best disc golf baskets I have ever seen in my life. There is quite a bit of snow; but it is easy to walk around the drifts. Most of the walkways are bone dry with just snow piled up on either side. The only issue is; if you throw your disc sloppy and slice to one side... you're going deep sea diving in a snow drift. There are 20 holes; I only threw 19 holes because I couldn't locate the 14th tee. Oh well. Only saw 2 or 3 other groups; no pressure at all and not crowded in any way. There are several "huts" and make shift shelters to grab a smoke break or get out of the Sun.

Like I said; personally checked it out- no posted ban on open carry. Another few days of this weather and the entire park should be dry. I will post if I get a reply from Beaver Ranch

Is there a posted ban on the carry of firearms in the park? Thank you.

CRS 29-11.7-104. Regulation - carrying - posting.

Oh and for the record; I did Not open carry while I played. Still not satisfied with my nylon hip holster; it's not tight and secure enough. Going to be looking towards an IWB holster to remedy.

Code:
Dear Sir,
Any individual who has a concealed carry permit may carry his or her
concealed weapon anywhere in Colorado as long as it does not violate
State or County statues. There is no statute prohibiting the carrying
of firearms at Conifer Community Park at Beaver Ranch so long as the
person carrying has a valid Colorado Concealed Carry Permit. Open
carry weapons are prohibited and a sign shall be posted noting that
Open Carry Firearms are not permitted and that Concealed Carry
Firearms in the possession of individuals with valid Concealed Carry
Permits is permitted.
Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.
