Thanks to a member of the combact carry forum I came to the knowledge that open carry is legal in NC providing you obey basically the same restrictions as you must when having a CCW permit. I have had my CCW permit for 8 years and while I would not want to OC often it was fun to soo some reactions. I live right on the state line, so I went and got gas this afternoon in NC, It was obvious a couple people saw the weapon, but no action or comments were made. I then proceeded across the state line in VA to eat at my favorite country diner. It was fairly crowded and I sat down in the back of the no smoking section, just my luck in came two Yankee couples. They sat down at the table next to me and began stating how much they missed NY and how awful the south is. They ordered tea, and around here you'll get sweet tea unless you say different, well they took a drink and started complaing to the waitress that there was way to much sugar in their tea and "where there from, the tea is brough unsweetened, the way it should be". Then one of the men complained his knife was dirty. The waitress was being a saint and I was biting my tougue. One of the men had a Thriftey Nickel newspaper, and made a comment that there was a AK47 for sale, and he thought it was awful that these "army guns" could be bought so easily. We are in deer season here, and one of the women made a comment about all the pick up's with guns in the window. One male says to his buddy, "het, I think I'll sell my BMW and buy a old junky 4x4 truck and put a gun rack in the back window". I am really getting upset and can only hope the waitress is spitting in their food, back in the kitchen. Well I get up to leave, and turn to squeeze out and you could have heard a pin drop at their table when they all stopped talking and just stared. One of the Lady's said "are you a police officer?", I said " no maam, y'all have a nice trip North" and turned and walked out the door. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to hear their discussion afterwards. Now before you jump on me for not covering up to avoid this conversation, let me say I was perfectly withing the law for doing what I was doing. I could have really told this lady what I thought of her and others like her, but it would have only portrayed Southerners in a bad way as well as gun owners so this was avoided, it is people like this why we have the stupid gun laws we have today. BTW, I am not against all Yankees, some of them are very nice folks, but others turn my stomach and they are moving into the south quicker than the illegal mexicans, not sure which is the worser of two evils. Just had to vent.

I will say other than the restaraunt it was a positive experience, but I will probably stay with CC. But it's nice to know I have other options.

Take Care

daaaaaam yankees! ;)

:uhoh:Well, being originally from NY (and still having family there), I know that of which you speak... The mindset is pathetic :banghead:. I think you did exactly what I would have.

You were polite, and didn't escalate the situation... even though they were being _________s. I'm right there with 'ya pal.

As a NJ yank by birth, I have to say that one of the reasons I chose to get a job in VA was the relatively good gun laws. Were I to move back to Jersey some day, I would be breaking some law the moment I crossed the border with my...belongings.

Rural South Jersey is bad enough, but the attitudes get worse as you move north into the urban areas of North Jersey and NY. For some stupid reason, many New Yorkers cannot get the idea of personal freedom, property rights, and responsibility for your own well-being through their heads. Once on a train ride through Arizona, I sat across a dinner table from a pretty New York City girl who marveled at the run-down shacks and junk cars she saw out the window in the desert and told me how in NYC those buildings would be condemned, etc. I asked her if it ever occurred to her that that attitude of sticking your nose into other people's business is precisely why some people choose to live so far out in the boonies, and she had no idea what I was talking about.

The only things I miss about living so close to NY are my family and good Italian restaurants (for some odd reason, there are only like 4 Italian people south of the Mason-Dixon line, and NJ, Philly, and NY have all the rest.)

Bravo for your restraint. I would have found it too tempting to add "and don't hurry back".

Welcome to OCDO NCHornet! I just joined combatcarry a few days ago (I'm Alaskan454 there), and have already found and read several of your posts - good stuff. Feel free to share here - your experiences definitely bear sharing, and flaming pretty much doesn't happen, so don't hesitate.

P.S. - Amen on the damn yankees!! Amazing restraint on your part.
