To OC do I need a certain type of holster, or will any hip holster work? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

welcome to the forum and i think im right by saying that any holster will work as long as it holds your weapon securely so that it is notlikely to fall out !!

No question is stupid. Welcome!

Just whatever holster feels right to you will be fine. I have a Fobus paddle for my Glock 21 and wear it open and covered.:dude:

This question has been kicked around here for awhile and since it's presented itself once again, I figured it might be a goo time to toss the log on the fire to see if anyone has any further information.

How about a shoulder rig? Are there any hard and fast rules?

My opinion only: Shoulder holsters are LEGAL in Ky......but used most often CC.

A shoulder holster kinda yells "LOOK"! to most sheeple, and the little darlins' get all wobble legged.

No...their wittle feelings aren't our resposibility....but....:dude:

OK, to re-visit this topic once more. *LOL* I recently had the pleasure of meeting a local attorney that is exetremely gun-friendly. We discussed many different issues and even had the chance to show off our sidearms to each other, don't we all enjoy showing off the one that we're proud of. *LOL*

The subject turned to holsters and horizontal shoulder rigs in particular. I inquired as to the legality of wearing a should rig for OC (without CCDW). He was kind of thoughtful in his reply, thinking about it for a few seconds, it kind of reminded me of the conversation I hadwith the KSP trooper about them. The attorney said that they would be considered legal but... there's always a but isn't there. *LOL* But it all depended upon some key factors.

In no particular order:

1. The size of gun (in reference to if the barrel and the butt of the gun were visible when being carried in a shoulder rig)

2. The size of the person carrying (if the carriers arm was large and the gun was small, it might cover the barrel from rear view and if the gun's small, the butt of the gun could be covered as well)

3. The type of holster (vertical or horizontal, the configuration could be an issue in an OC situation)

4. The officer's training and personal POV (Each officer that you might encounter out there will have their training knowledge that they will fall back on as well as their own POV of the situation)

There were other things mentioned as well but theses were the main ones that stuck out. As he said, technically they're legal but there are issues that could end up landing you in court andpersonally, I find it better to avoid things going that far if at all possible. He agreed in my assessment that it's better to NOT risk the LEO encounter until you have your CCDW in pocket. Better safe than sorry and without our prized sidearm! *LOL*

NOTICE: This is not/was not meant as a legal "final answer" to this query, just an exchange of thoughts. Carry WISELY!!!!

Another holster option that wasn't mentioned yet, a Tactical Thigh holster! I've been looking at these for a couple of months as another carry option. Being that the weather has been absurdly cold recently and OC with a typical belt holster just isn't possible.

The thigh holster provides another carry option being that it lowers the profile of your sidearm and places it at a more optimal angle for draw, if need be. Additionally, with it lowering the profile of your weapon, it makes open carry possible with a short/normal length jacket, as long as itDOESN'T cover the butt of the sidearm,so that you can stay warm and still legally OC as well.

Just throwing it out there for discussion in the forum.

I personally like a holster that carried close to my body. Like the fobus paddle holsters, they are well made and never fail me yet. Plus the are cheap and maintenance free. What a bargain!:dude:

+1

I've got one of those myself for that exact reason, I love being able to wear a regular coat instead of only hoodies and sweatshirts.

In warmer weather, I use a Safariland OWB holster. I love it because it has a stiff thumb release that you actuate during the natural draw of the weapon, you don't even have to think about it. It takes very little pressure to undue it but yet retains the weapon securely.

They are a bit pricier than the bargain basement holsters, but you get what you pay for.
