The Story

The Belmar shopping center is here in red on the map. They have festive, Christmas lights along every way. My girlfriend and I live a block away and decided to go for a walk and get some coffee. We parked at that red star there on the map. We were on the other side of the block when we were called out by three guys on the street. In description, these were typical metro-Denver thugs. One yelled out, "Hey is that your girl?" Her and I were born and raised in Detroit city- we learned to keep our mouths shut. We ignored it. He yelled again, "I want her when you are done with her!" I made eye contact and quickly looked away in the direction we were walking. A minute later, I glanced back to see them walking again in a different direction. Things get scary, here, as now we are walking down a road that is unoccupied. We were the only people. I immediatly felt tense. My adrenaline surged and peaked as I cased the street for danger. Our pistols were in the glovebox of my car! We left them in the car! Not even a stick to grab- no bricks- no garbage cans- we would be outnumbered and probably stabbed, if attacked. We made it to the edge of the road, turned the corner and found a police car parked, unoccupied. I felt only a tiny bit better. We made a straight line for the car, feeling almost dominated. Like we were then unwelcome.

Here's the deal- the Belmar is PACKED with people, shops, and food. There is an ice skating rink, although tiny, in the middle of this plaza. My girlfriend and I honestly didn't think our pistols would be welcome.

Anybody know if there would be any restrictions here? According to the map, these are actual roads and streets. Are we legally able to walk the sidewalks between these shops and such, along these streets and roads? I believe so, but need some opinions here for encouragement. Even another couple that wouldn't mind grabbing a coffee, strapped, of course. PM me for that.

Not to play Monday morning quarterback, but you did have the option of not leaving the well-populated area until the thugs got bored with you. Not my preferred option, but it was there. There's the risk that they may have been CCing without concern to whether their weapons were "welcome". Even if you two were armed, three against two with the three intent on causing trouble aren't great odds.

Honestly I wouldn't go anywhere in the Denver area unarmed. I can understand going down an unpopulated road if that was the only escape route from the thugs but that would be my last option. Glad youmade it out okay. Next time don't worry so much about what people think and worry about having the means and smarts to keep you and yours safe.

hell yeah man, i'll open carry there. i haven't seen any signs there saying gun free zone. i open carried at the king soopers across the street, which is next door to that lakewood PD.

we should get some coffee. i'm in lakewood somewhat regularly. i'm sure there is a coffee shop in belmar.

sorry to hear about your story. my wife is opposed to me carrying when i am with her, which is frustrating.

Not Denver County? Then OC is legal. Best advice: get a CCW and you don't have to worry about it anywhere in CO. A gun in your car when you aren't just collects dust.

I use to live in Lakewood and went to Alameda High. Although its not five points Denver, it is full of shady thug kids with attitudes. I would meet you for coffee, as far as strapped, I always am. My pistol is like my wedding band, always on!

My wife is the same way. I have her read these forums and stories like this and she is starting to come around. She has just started to let me OC around the house full time and even ask me to leave it on tonight while out looking at Christmas lights with are five girls.

The weekend after new years works well for me also. We need to get a group together that can meet once a month in different parts of town. And the wifes are welcome!

My girlfriend and I live together. After our neighbor's condo was robbed (in daylight- and I was home), she got her first pistol. That was a few months ago and she has a dozen shootouts under her belt at the range now. When your wives meet my girlfriend, strapped, they will see a different side to all of this. My girl can definitely help bring your wives around if they are uneasy. She carries a Bersa 9mm Thunder Pro that we purchased from a gun shop off of Colfax.

Sounds like a good time guys

I come up to Conifer once or twice a week. I lived right off Light Ln at the New Safeway. My folks live further up the hill. Would I recognize you? Small town.. I worked at the Staples and the Movie Gallery two years ago.

well i was flying solo. i was there for about 20 minutes but no one showed up. it wasn't useless though, i successfully open carried all over belmar and no one said anything. i got one sorta dirty look from a couple in the coffee shop, but otherwise no issues.

we'll have to try again sometime. that coffee shop was good, better than starbucks.
