Hi everyone. After about4 hours of reading interesting discussion on this site today i decided to join. I couldn't join without making a post right? Just wanted to add somethingabout the ignorance (not meant in an insulting manner)of some people. I was at Gander Mountain which is a sporting good store. It was at a location here in the Indianapolis area. I was in the firearms department and looking at firearms ready to buy my new Springfield Armory XD compact 9mm. I had my Glock 23 (.40 for all you non-glock people out there) in my holster on my waist. The man that came up to the counter asked me if I had any former shooting or carrying experience. I Pointed out the fact that I had my glock 23 that I was carrying concealed but obviously put into plain view when he asked. Never removed the weapon from the holster...didn't even touch the weapon or holster in any way. After asking me if i was properly licensed to carry, he said that I had better keep that gun concealed at all times, unless planning on using it, if I wanted to keep my ass put of jail. I told him that there was no law against OC in Indiana and he told me that I was wrong. I politely told him that he may want to check into it and that he had just blew a sale because if I was going to buy a firearm I wanted to buy it from someone who knew something about them and maybe at least a little something about the laws surrounding them. I left went to a local gun store and spent $40 more for the gun just because of the pure principle of the situation.

I don't see how that makes sense. The guy is just an employee of Gander Mountain. He could be new/senile/stubborn/ignorant and you just happen to know more than he does about the OC issue.

I could see if you knew that, say, Gander Mountain favored laws against OC in IN that you could make a purchase elsewhere on principle. That would make sense.

But you paid $40 for you XD because one employee goofed on the law? With no detriment to you?

How is Gander Mountain gonna knowit lost a sale forthe salesguy'soffense, by the way?

Are you not gonna buy ammo from GM for the same reason? Just curious.

Surely an employee of a gun shop should have certain minimum training about the laws affecting what he is doing for a living? Just like the police...:celebrate I think I would do a bit more investigating via the shop managment, etc., but hey, it's your call.

It isn't the fact that he didnt know about the law. It was the fact that he didnt know about the law, yet was arrogant enough to say it the way he said it. He said "I had better keep that gun concealed at all times, unless planning on using it, if I wanted to keep my ass out of jail". That was the frustrating part for me. Maybe he should have said something like...I'm not sure if it is legal to carry that gun in an opened manner. He obviously hadn't seen anything saying it was in fact illegal because such literature doesnt exist, but he was so arrogant and cocky in the way that he said it. I truly think he said it because he was probably in his 70's and I was 21 at the time.

I think you did right in buying from folks that knew the laws regarding what they sell. Now, get a copy of whatever shows that OC is legal and go back to Gander Mountain, buy some ammo, cleaning supplies, etc. Be sure to go to the same guy. Say "I checked into what you said and this is what I found out. Thought you would like to know as well." Then make your purchases through him. He'll get to see you take the high road while allowing him to save face.

Let's bring him over to the good side of the force. :D
