I understand that non-residents who have a concealed weapon's permit from their home state may have a firearm in their car. Does this exception require that the car be their own personal vehicle? I'm talking about a private commercial bus (that doesn't have a no-firearms policy).

Thanks to anyone who knows the answer!

The concealed carry law says- Nothing in this act shall prohibit a non-resident from transporting a concealed firearm within his or her vehicle in Illinois, if the concealed firearm remains in his or her vehicle....

The language is a little goofy because they are talking about concealed carry and referring to it a transporting. I don't know of anything preventing you from transporting an unloaded encased handgun on a private commercial bus. That would be unloaded and encased. A loaded magazine or speed loader can be in the case with the handgun. The case could be a fanny pack such as an Uncle Mikes Sidekick, purse, European Man's bag, brief case, backpack, or something else like that. I transported like in an Uncle Mikes fanny pack for over 8 years. It is sometimes called "6 seconds to safety". I quit now that I can carry with my Illinois CHL.

The concealed carry law says . . . within his or her vehicle ....

Ok, well that rules out vehicles that are NOT owned by us (i.e. buses, taxis, etc.), unfortunately.

So we could carry unloaded in a case anywhere (that means downtown Chicago, which is our unfortunate destination), it would seem, right? That may be our only hope. Details on carrying that way, such as any legal gotchas would be appreciated.

Thanks all!

My wife and I decided to just drive (hate doing so because our A/C is out). We also decided to skip the overnight stay at the hotel (expensive anyway) and just slip into the city in the morning and then straight back out after finishing our business.

We're definitely buying a GPS nav system since the last time I drove to Chicago years back I got lost and ended up in some not so nice neighborhoods.

The one time in my life I was in Chicago I never left the airport and it was a short 1 1/2 hours where I just barely made my connecting flight using the most efficient transportation availaibe--- that of the the on airport transit system, but I'll say this anyway----- IF you're in the city limits of Chicago, YOU are not in a good neighborhood!:shocker:

Just recently the state rep who was the primary sponsor of the Illinois concealed carry legislation, Brandon Phelps, a democrat from Southern Illinois was talking to the media about reciprocity for residents of other states CHLs. Maybe that will be something that will be introduced in the 2015 legislative session.
