I recently moved to Alabama from Kentucky, where I had no issue at all with OC. I'm from here originally, but moved to KY when I joined the Army. I'm in Centre, AL near Ft. Payne and Gadsden. I'm a little confused as to the law regarding OC here. From what I can tell so far, please correct me if I am wrong, it is LEGAL to OC in the public but once you get into a vehicle you must posses a CC permit. I have heard several different solutions to this, but I'm unsure which is the right way to do it. Am I supposed to take my weapon off and lay it in the seat? On the dash? Or are all these wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am a recent transplant from Alabama.
I have studied Alabama gun law extensively, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no way to carry in your car without a license. Some folks will cite the federal law that describes how to carry from one place where you are allowed to possess to another place where you are allowed to possess, but that law specifically states that it is for interstate travel--and, unless you are in interstate travel, State law should prevail as the matter is none of the fed's business.
Anyway, getting an Alabama CPL is a piece of cake compared to many other States. Get your license as soon as you can. Call your county sheriff to get the particulars on how he wants you to go about it.
Car carry without a license is one of several things which are the only State-created impediments to unlicensed carry. They are:
1. Carry in a car requires a license.
2. Carry at or near a demonstration is unlawful.
3. The section of code fondly referred to as "Dash 52" makes it sound like OC is illegal.
Fix those three things (and GFSZ at the federal level) and the exercise of the Right without a permission slip in AL would be easy.

Yes OC is legal. However Alabama has plenty of LEO who are either ignorant to the fact or just enjoy giving you problems. One thing some areas like to do is charge OC'ers with Disorderly Conduct, even though it doesn't fit the description of DC. A CC permit IS required to possess a pistol in your vehicle. There are a few exceptions to this, but it's best to have a permit because the exceptions are quite limited. I'm from DeKalb County (neighbor to you) and we are currently trying to get a meeting going in Ft. Payne. Currently we have 2-3 people and we meet at the BBQ Place on Hwy 11 in Ft. Payne.
