Freightdog,

Thank you for your link and response. That takes care some of my main questions but I still have the question of my son (age 16). The link you provided me said a minimum age of 14 to OC but do they still have the same rights or privileges as an 18 or 21+ adult? Especially with a pistol.

As for the bears I have put my Remington .3006 under the rear seat of my truck.

Thank you,
-Wallace

I'm not sure what rights or privileges you are referring too. If you mean; Can he defend himself if he is in fear for his life? Then yes.
However fed law requires that he be 21 in order to carry the firearm concealed on his person, the state only requires him to be 14 to open carry. The state follows the fed law concerning under 21 for concealed carry.
You on the other hand may carry open or concealed any where the law allows without a permit. Welcome to Constitutional carry, and welcome to Alaska.

BTW concealed carry is handy when its -50, you can get cold burns when bare skin comes in contact with a firearm exposed to the elements, plus gun lube will freeze at those temps on an exposed firearm. My recipe is one part corrosion x to two parts synthetic trans fluid.

And what law would that be? A cite would be preferred.

Sorry its Alaska law

Alaska Statute 11.61.220 allows anyone 21 or older, who may legally carry a firearm to also carry it concealed without having to obtain a special permit. The possession of a firearm at courthouses, school yards, bars and domestic violence shelters will continue to be prohibited. Alaskans may obtain a concealed carry permit if they want reciprocity with other states.

A person 21 or older may be charged with Misconduct involving Weapons in the 5th degree under AS 11.61.220 if s/he

* fails to immediately inform a peace officer that s/he is carrying a concealed handgun
* fails to allow the officer to secure the weapon or fails to secure the weapon at the direction of the peace officer, or
* carries the weapon concealed within another person's residence, unless s/he has first obtained the express permission of an adult residing there, whether or not the person has a concealed handgun permit.

Hello all!,
My name is Wallace and I am new to the wonderful state of Alaska for a job. The laws in Ohio and Alaska are quite different so I figured I would stop by here to make sure I have all of the laws strait before I do anything.

Since I am 32, I am above 18 so I should be able to OC. (Springfield Armory XD-9)
1. Can I have a round in the chamber?
2. Do I have to unload or lock the gun up in a safe box in a vehicle?
3. Can I open carry on an ATV?
4. Are there any specific places I can not OC in besides government buildings or schools?

Also I have an son who is 16. Can he OC (Springfield Armory XD-9 as well) on an ATV or an in a small town on the edge of the bush?

Thank you for all your help!

Wallace,

Your 16 year old may carry but you do need to write him a Letter of Consent and As I did I would have it Notorized ...

My 15 Year old Daughter Carries a nice little Pink Lady Charter Arms .38 with +p rounds for Moose bears and other Teenage animals out in the Open all the time In or small little bush town....

I think you knwo all the answers to the rest form the other posts...

but you xd-9 is a well behaved gun you should not have an issue carry it with one in the pipe and a full mag unless you go on school properity with the written permmisson of the Super... or if you go in to a Bar that servers there (notice I didn't say Liquor store) and you dont have to chase your wife into a shelter..... and dont forget those Damn Post offices 99 out 100 times no one will says a word to you but the feds like to keep there emplyees in check so they would let anyone in execpt for lawful useage that kinda funny because if i am carry for protection i would think thats lawful??? And dont forget when you go to you friends house make sure you ask if its ok to carry there not to metion if you go in a court house or Fed Building then leave it in your car OK??!!

any way that shoudl sum it up for you

Welcome to Alaska -- very possibly the most gun-friendly place in the world! Just read and follow the law linked above and you should be fine. Common sense prevails. If someone objects to your gun and asks you to leave, just leave. (I've never had this happen.) There's one thing you need to be aware of that is not intuitively obvious; although it is legal to carry openly or concealed in national parks, that does not include the administrative buildings like Ranger stations. I just stick my handgun under the seat of my car if I need to go into one of those buildings.
