New gun owner interested in open carry

I am interested in owning a firearm, preferably a handgun (and a home defense shotgun potentially) in Anderson Indiana (madison county). I was just curious how one even goes about this? I have not owned a firearm before and have read up on rules here and there but can't seem to find a definite yes or no on open carry in Indiana.

Where can I go to get my permit in Anderson? Where do you suggest I purchase my firearm? Do you have a handgun suggestion for opencarry in Indiana?

Youtube is great for video reviews and comparisons of different firearms. Pricewise it's pretty hard to beat www.budsgunshop.com. They will ship to an FFL holder near you. www.Armslist.com is cool for used stuff.

Indiana isn't like many states out west that allow open carry without any kind of permit or proof of training. Here, whether you want to carry openly or concealed, you must have a license to carry a handgun, which costs $45 for four years and $125 for a lifetime license.

Thanks for the quick replies! Money is short right now and I don't honestly intend to use the gun more than a few times at a range just to know how to use it (I've shot at a range a few years ago with an ex who's father owned a range, but have not shot at all since) so I'm looking on the cheaper and more cost effective side of hand guns. More than anything I just want to carry to educate people about guns and help gun enthusiasts not lose their passion and their rights. I have a friend who open carries in Indy, but I don't get to see him often anymore and have not gotten a chance to talk to him about it.

What is a good place to look for cost effective, affordable and/or potentially used guns? 800 dollars is a bit steep for me right now, and keeping it under 300 is preferred.

Armslist is the classifieds for guns. Gunbroker.com is another gun auction site that has to ship to an FFL near you.

We can't really tell you what you would like. So start looking up gun models and watch review vids on Youtube. Begin to narrow down what your looking for. Figure out what your looking for in a frame size. Do you want a compact, sub-compact, full size or some strange one of a kind. Then start to look for a source for new vs used.

I don't know of any good shops around Anderson, but if you can make the trip down to fishers, try Indy Gun Safety.

They can get you started with a gun and basic instruction, as well as more advanced instruction as you learn.

Another good trainer is Guy Relford. He also happens to be an attorney well versed in firearms law and litigation.

My XOL carried a fluffed and buffed Kel-Tec P-32 belly-gun that I recall that I got for about $200.

I will look into the gun. At first glance on the internet, it says it's really popular for concealed carry. It's small size makes it a very viable option. Thanks for the suggestion!
