I was recently in WV camping with some friends. A few of them were from IL and NY so I invited them to go shooting at a local range, so we went to Walmart to pick up some ammo, and I decided to open carry (couldn't get a permit as I am a AZ resident).

The guy at the ammo counter didn't care in the least that I was carrying (not too big of a surprise there), but we also walked through the toys section looking for Air Hogs to fly back at the camp site, and hung out for a while there. No one seemed to care there either, even the kids- I almost thought I was in AZ.

Unfortunately circumstances kept us from actually making it to the range (the women wanted to mini-golf). :)

I didn't carry much, but that was my experience in WV.

I am a little new to the OC .. what is it that makes it ok to open carry in another state? I went to VA and I was under the impression that I couldn't open carry there because I don't have reciprocity between that state and my home state? I was under the impression that it was just for your home state. let me know what you know. thanks

In most cases citizens of another state enjoy the same rights as citizens of the state they are visiting. In Virginia open carry does not require a permit so anyone legally allowed to possess a pistol may carry it openly. Think of it in the same way you can exercise your first amendment rights in Virginia

Open carry is the law of the land in both VA and WV.

Residency is not required to open carry in either state. The way it works is that if it isn't specifically prohibited it is legal and open carry is not mentioned in the laws of either state......thus....legal.

Reciprocity only comes into play with regard to concealed carry.
