My Letter to Our US Senators from Colorado

I sent this letter to both Senators. Hopefully we all share similar views (except for one, I'm sure).

Greetings Senator,

In the wake of the recent tragedies in Newtown, CT and here at home in the Denver area this past summer, our country faces a growing threat of the repeal of our 2nd Amendment rights. While painful, heartbreaking, and disturbing, what has happened in recent months (and the years dating back to the Columbine shooting) has no bearing on my, or my fellow American's right to keep and bear arms. I am writing to you today to implore you to reject any new or proposed legislation that would significantly have a negative impact on our 2nd Amendment.

Sir, I must ask, what do you think will come of a new law that severely limits the manufacture and sale of not just "assault weapons," but of all firearms and ammunition? And by what definition do my elected officials refer to as an "assault weapon?" Keep in mind that the 2nd Amendment does not discriminate against, nor describe, any firearm. Furthermore, it also clearly states that the right to keep and bear arms "shall not be infringed." Wouldn't you agree that the 2nd Amendment has been infringed upon enough with the passing of the Brady Bill, the Gun Control Act of 1968, and similar others?

I gave seven of the proudest years of my life to support and defend the Constitution of this great nation during a time when our country had faced the greatest terrorist attack we've ever seen. I did it not for the money or for the pride of family and friends, but because I believe that we all have the right to live and be free. During that time, we took down Saddam Hussein and freed a nation from tyrannical oppression. Oppression that I believe could happen here. And although I left the service beforehand, I can say I played a role in the search for Bin Laden and the eradication of Al Qaida and the Taliban in the Middle East. Organizations that wish to destroy our Nation. To pass a bill in the Senate or The House would mean that all my brothers and sisters who died for those same causes would all be in vain.

It is not the gun that kills, Mr. Senator, it's the person behind it. A law banning the use of a car because of the rate of drunk-driving deaths wouldn't pass, would it?

I am also writing to your partner Senator in the hopes that the two of you will come together and reject what truly is a knee-jerk reaction. Instead, why not a bill that would greatly increase the amount of mental health care for an individual the likes of James Holmes, Adam Lanza, and the killers behind Jonesboro Middle School and Columbine? Those who need help but aren't able to get it?

In closing, Mr. Senator, I'll leave you with this. I voted Democrat in this past election because I believe in nearly all of the ideals that The Left holds dear. Sir, this is not one of those ideals that I agree with. If this new proposed legislation were to pass, where does it end? I believe that all Americans have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I thought all Democrats did as well.

I'm not trying to toot my own horn or be an attention floozy, but with the thread about the letter to the Representative in Boulder as inspiration (and yeah I stole a line or two...), I thought I'd go straight to the source of all the hoopla. I'll post both their responses when I get them. And don't be so surprised you just met another Lib who supports and encourages gun rights!

Thank you for contacting me regarding the tragedy of the Newtown shooting. I appreciate hearing from you.
The unthinkable events which took place in Newtown, Connecticut are staggering. Like all Colorado families, my family was shocked and deeply saddened by the violence, and my heart is with the victims, their families and the entire state of Connecticut. As Coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core and in the aftermath of these abhorrent acts our priority should be on supporting the survivors and families, and healing our communities.
We must have a real discussion in this country about finding ways to stop these types of senseless shootings. While no one law is likely to prevent a deranged individual committed to taking life from doing so, we should have a comprehensive and civil conversation about finding the right and most effective solutions to protect our communities and particularly, our children. This includes exploring a number of areas, such as mental health services, violence in our culture, and a review of our gun laws.

I got a form letter back from my senator (Vogel), but when I replied to that with an additional comment, she replied back with additional discussion as well.

Good on ya for writing! The staffers who reply will usually NOT pass your letter on to the "anointed one" but they DO respect volume. We all need to pitch in. Your letter was VERY well written. I'd like to lift some of your phrasing when writing our two, if I may, and I plan to ask friends and family to write, email and call as well. If we can "turn up the volume" - as in quantity - then perhaps we may actually get through with our message.

Go visit him at his home ... that's what I do when I want a real response ... otherwise you let him know you are not happy.

When it gets up for a committee hearing, write the committee and let them know too .. that's important too.

Senators love it when you visit their house .. and don't forget to tell him "I was cleaning my gun when I heard over the radio of this bill..." -- they'll listen intently after that.

Way back when, I was a democrat. I voted for Clinton in '92. After the Democrats having full control of the Congress, Senate and Whitehouse passed NAFTA and GATT when they were voted in to oppose it (we all knew Bush Sr would pass them), many felt betrayed.

Then came the crime bill and AW ban for '94. I found that in fact, I really had no use for the Democrats, the liberals and their positions. Their positions wouild change depending on who they talked to, and usually their final vote would be for the worst outcome in relation to the health of the community.

I started getting educated, to delve deeper into cause and effect of various actions and their net effect on the nation. I read a lot about firearms and rights etc, including a lot of stuff by the writers of the Constitution about its passage and debates. I learned that the real party of racism was the Democratic party - slavery, Jim Crow, the KKK - were all Democratic Party products (I can garauntee you as a leader in the KKK Senator Byrd killed more than one brother in his career).

Ultimately, I found I was more conservative than I thought, and things I learned made me more conservative still. For instance, free benefits at other's expense only make the recipients lazy when they must do nothing to earn said benefits, it doesn't lift them out of poverty - they are perfectly happy to collect a check on the 1st of the month and live as they do without working for it.

BTW, I contacted Mr. Bennett also, and I got much the same reply as you. I sent one back letting him know he missed the point, but its to no avail. He is someone who will committ treason and vote against the Constitution and your right to defend yourself against all enemies foreign and domestic.

I wish that would work. I'm turning into a MASSIVE pessimist. Why? They are ok with losing the legislature again. It's not a threat anymore. First off, they can lie and spin and have the media's help in distracting the electorate. If they can pass it now, they get 2 years to make people forget. in 1994, they passed it too close to an election to get the hypnotist machine in gear and effectively distract the sheep. This time, they'll do it with 2 years to make the boob tube generation forget it all. Second, Bill Clinton announced that was the plan in a recent speech. one of the things he said was:

"Do not be self-congratulatory about how brave you for being for this" gun control push, he said. "The only brave people are the people who are going to lose their jobs if they vote with you."

They know they are going to lose seats. They see it as a necessary sacrifice to push this through. But this time it won't sunset. AND, in 5 years when the dust has settled and the people are effectively placated through media spin and lies, they will take back the legislature. Yeah, I'm a pessimist. I wasn't 5 years ago.
