My first less than positive encounter

I would not classify this as a negative encounter, but it certainly wasn't positive... I'm an east-ender (no jokes :p ) and OC regularly in Holiday Manor Kroger and Starbucks. Everyone there knows me and I regularly talk politics and guns with the folks at 'bucks. I stopped by Shiraz in Holiday Manor this afternoon to get some dinner for me and my wife. I had just returned from a funeral in Frankfort, so I was dressed in suit pants, white button down and a tie - oh, and my G19 on my side. When I walked in, two guys behind the counter were standing several paces from the register and when they saw me come in one started walking toward the register, saw my sidearm and stopped and grabbed his partner. They just stood there looking like they were going to wet themselves - not the reaction I would like to have from folks. I continued toward the register, said "Hi" and started ordering. The guys looked at each other and approached the register to put in my order, asking what sides I wanted, etc. As I was signing my slip, he asked "So, are you a cop or a detective or something?" I responded "No, I'm just a citizen exercising his rights to carry a weapon for my protection and yours." I then handed him a business card I had made up that describes the 2A and Kentucky's constitution, as well as some key KRS lines. He just said "Oh, okay" and everything was pretty normal from there.

I guess the reason I would consider it less than positive was the look of abject fear on this young man's face when he saw me carrying. Hopefully, he learned a little something today and that LEOs and bad guys aren't the only people who carry sidearms.

I had something similar happen when i carried into a gas station in Frankfort the other day the poor guy seemed like he was going to just pass out lol, I was in nice khakis and a button up short sleeve shirt tucked in etc with my xdm on my side!

However I do wish i had the great idea of the business card as you do, maybe shoot me a message with the format or template you used?! I dont think im creative enough! I did of course inform the gentleman I was simply carrying for mine and his protection.

I think its awesome you made sure to inform them and pass along the education! Lets hope he takes it as a learning curve thoe and doesn't expect the next guy who talks in armed to be as kind! ( unless of course the guy has it holstered and wearing a suit and tie?!)

Here are the cards I am using. I could probably swap some KRS for the case law examples and be more effective.

In your cards; "Kentucky Regulatory Statues" umm, About that... It's 'Revised' not 'Regulatory', xD and not to be a stickler, but in case you give it to a cop or a lawyer and they say something like "I don't recognize the regulatory statutes, only the revised ones" Trust me, I've had that happen to me in the past LOL.

Citation; http://www.lrc.ky.gov/law.htm

And to be even more picky; the Card should have the faded imaging of the Commonwealth's flag, since other than mentioning the U.S. constitution, everything else is to do with Kentucky, and the KRS, and Ky Con., mentioned is state, not federal. And furthermore, to add "...compliance with all Federal..." The only 'Federal' law that you're in compliance with, is our 2nd Amendment, and the 1st Amendment for the activist/protected speech portion. Everything else is Exclusive to Kentucky, and should be imaged as such.

Guy, in your post, "Drake, in your post; umm, About that..." the about should not be capitalized because it is not the beginning of a sentence.

This cracked me up! Good call, though. I didn't have a lot of choices on the background, but of the ones they had this seemed most relevant.

I had a negative incident about a week ago.

I was in Walmart looking through some magazines and I noticed a manager come up behind me and turn towards me like he was about to speak to me, at which point he noticed my badge beside my firearm and smiled and walked off.

About thirty seconds after he walked away an elderly gentleman approached me and apologized for notifying "management" about my firearm. I had a discussion with the gentleman about the right to be armed at all times in this Commonwealth, regardless of whether one is a peace officer or not, and informed him that next time he notices someone with a holstered firearm that he should just go up and speak with them if he gets concerned. I made sure to inform him that most people that openly carry a firearm are very decent folk' that just want to exercise their rights while maintaining a way of protecting themselves.

I am still curious about what the manager might have said had I not been wearing my badge at the time. Would he have asked for me to leave, or return my firearm to my vehicle? You never know what will happen from day to day if you decide to go about your daily business visibly armed. It is always wise to maintain a very HIGH sense of awareness, and always be alert of your surroundings.

Glockster... a 'badge'? You're a cop? Does this mean I have to stop making nude photographs of you using my imagination of what you'd look like based on how you type?

I like the way they look... the only info i printed on mine is a Tittle, "slogan" and links to a FB OC group i created and link to OCDO. You never know when laws might change etc. so i didn't want to print specifics. Also, I like to talk to people about it, so I inform them verbally and then just hand them a card and say to go check out the website for more info.

Thanks! I wasn't sure about the policy around putting the OCDO ON the cards. Being that I goofed up the Revised versus Regulatory, probably a good thing I did not!

MANTIOCH, i would like to point out a lot of the positive that you had in the encounter. first these guys were not used to seeing regular citizens carry (if they thought you were a cop what were they afraid of, humm).

you were clean cut and you behaved in a positive way. you educated them. they now know that someone carrying a firearm is not going to hurt them.

they didn't kick you out. all in all, i would say it was a very positive encounter

I'm a peace officer. I don't like the word "cop," because it is an acronym that stands for "constable on patrol." It makes me think of someone with their knee in your throat because you wouldn't hand over identification.

As for your imagination: I can't tell you what to think, but I can assure you I am not the best looking guy in the world.

I always thought it was short for copper, referring to the large copper star worn on thief chest.

Hmm, I don't like cops in general... however I'll just group you in the "good guy" category that only a couple cops have ever been put in... except your in there because your a contributor for our OC rights on this forum, the others ... wellllll.... Lets just say they was 'bad' in a very 'good' way *wink wink nudge nudge say no more [with a monty python British accent]*
