Meijer Joins Walmart, Kroger, Walgreens in Banning Open Carry

AWR Hawkins

On September 9, 2019, Meijer joined Walmart, Kroger, and Walgreens in banning customers from openly carrying firearms.
The retailer made the announcement via Twitter:

Breitbart News reported Walmart and Kroger each announced a ban on open carry September 3, 2019. Kroger executives also made clear they are encouraging to Congress to act for more gun control and Walmart CEO Doug McMillon indicated his company was asking the White House to secure “common sense” gun controls.

On September 5, 2019, Walgreens joined Walmart and Kroger, banning open carry in its stores as well.

MLive reported on Miejer’s ban on open carry, noting “it was not immediately clear what, if any, changes Meijer is making to sales of ammunition and firearms.”

The retailer made the announcement via Twitter:

The safety of our customers and team members is our top priority, so we respectfully request that our customers do not openly wear crosses or the Star of David at Meijer. We’ve made this decision because openly wearing crosses or the Star of David can create an environment that makes our customers and team members feel unsafe.

Kroger Bans Open Carry, Asks Congress to Pass More Gun Control

AWR Hawkins 4 Sep 20197896 2:14
Kroger announced Tuesday it will no longer permit customers to openly carry firearms, even in states where it is legal.
This marks a 180 degree policy shift for the grocer, which made news in 2015 by announcing Kroger stores would honor laws of the states and communities in which each store was located.

At that time, Kroger CFO Michael Schlotman told CNBC gun control groups were pressuring the grocer to ban open carry, however, the grocer was pledging to operate in light of the law: “If the local gun laws are to allow open carry, we’ll certainly allow customers to do that based on what the local laws are. We don’t believe it’s up to us to legislate what the local gun control laws should be. It’s up to the local legislators to decide to do that.”

But on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, Reuters reported Kroger’s announcement customers are being asked to discontinue openly carrying firearms.
Kroger vice president of corporate affairs Jennifer Adelman said, “Kroger is respectfully asking that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores, other than authorized law enforcement officers.

Kroger asks customers to quit openly carrying guns in stores

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. grocer Kroger Co (KR.N) has begun asking customers to stop openly carrying firearms in stores, a change in policy, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Kroger previously had followed local and state laws on the matter, she said.

“Kroger is respectfully asking that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores, other than authorized law enforcement officers,” Jessica Adelman, group vice president of corporate affairs, said in an emailed statement.

McMillon to Associates: Our Next Steps in Response to the Tragedies in El Paso and Southaven

"As it relates to safety in our stores, there have been multiple incidents since El Paso where individuals attempting to make a statement and test our response have entered our stores carrying weapons in a way that frightened or concerned our associates and customers. We have also had well-intentioned customers acting lawfully that have inadvertently caused a store to be evacuated and local law enforcement to be called to respond. These incidents are concerning and we would like to avoid them, so we are respectfully requesting that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores or Sam’s Clubs in states where “open carry” is permitted – unless they are authorized law enforcement officers.

We believe the opportunity for someone to misinterpret a situation, even in open carry states, could lead to tragic results. We hope that everyone will understand the circumstances that led to this new policy and will respect the concerns of their fellow shoppers and our associates. As it relates to concealed carry by customers with permits, there is no change to our policy or approach. This morning, we briefed your leadership team on how to communicate this change in policy to customers when needed, and they will be sharing that with you very soon. We will treat law-abiding customers with respect, and we will have a very non-confrontational approach. Our priority is your safety. We will be providing new signage to help communicate this policy in the coming weeks."
…………………………………………………………………………...

Solus, as can be seen from the new releases and in store communications those that continue to Open Carry in their stored do against the expressed wishes of the businesses authorities. The above communication from McMillon to Associates addresses that very matter and signage is coming to the stores. This statement is very easy to understand:
As it relates to safety in our stores, there have been multiple incidents since El Paso where individuals attempting to make a statement and test our response have entered our stores carrying weapons in a way that frightened or concerned our associates and customers.
Also this statement:
We will be providing new signage to help communicate this policy in the coming weeks.

Carry On.

Monday 1 Oct, in the WalMart in Franklin NC, I was approached by the store manager. He quietly informed me about their new policy against OC. I was not being asked to leave but was being asked not to OC in the future. At that point I simply draped my shirt over the gun, which he liked. He went on to say it grew out of "a shooting inside a WM store." My response was that I carry because of a shooting inside a WM. He appreciated that reasoning, but had to uphold corporate policy.
In all the time I've spent there I've not seen more than 3 other OCers, but most folks ignored it.
