Saw this news item a few minutes ago. This apparently happened last week sometime. To keep this relevant to open carry, I'll point out that Delegate Swain, the apparent crime victim in the article below, voted FOR SB281 and is no friend of gun owners, certainly no supporter of the carry of firearms, whether open or concealed.

Setting aside the, um, unusual circumstances under which this encounter took place, I wonder if delegate Swain will be changing his stance on gun ownership and carry as a result of his beating.

A Maryland delegate was beaten and robbed after going to an abandoned apartment with a group of young men early Sunday morning.

Delegate Darren Swain, of Prince George's County, says his car, wallet and cell phones were taken.

According to charging documents, Swain was robbed and beaten about 3 a.m. in Upper Marlboro, Md., by two or three people, including 19-year-old Keion Naylor, who is being held on multiple charges.

Swain confirmed the incident to News4 Friday.

According the final charging documents, Swain picked up the men at an unknown Exxon around 3 a.m. He says they asked for a ride. He told police that he gave the men a ride to a home in Upper Marlboro and asked to use a bathroom “against his better judgment.”

Swain ended up at apartment 203, according to charging documents. Shortly after that, he was attacked.

Swain told News4 he’s doing just fine, but a neighbor described a hallway covered in blood. There is still some on the mailbox.

The neighbor said she heard cries for help.

“I just heard a young man hollering for help,” she said.

She said apartment 203 is vacant, and she was confused by the early morning commotion.

Keion Naylor“The police are going to, I’m sure, prosecute them to the extent that they committed a crime, and they have, so they’re going to be prosecuted, I’m sure,” Swain said.

Naylor (pictured, right) is facing charges for assault, stealing two of Swain’s cell phones and his gray 2007 Nissan Maxima with state delegate tags 71. The car has been recovered.

“The fact of the matter is that Darren Swain is OK,” Swain said. ”His property was stolen and recovered and the people who, to my knowledge, perpetrated the crime have been apprehended and are being taken care of.”

Gov. Martin O’Malley appointed Swain to fill a vacant seat in the 24th District of the Maryland House of Delegates in January
