wow.

As someone who has taken taken and taught KI AIKIDO for 20+ years, I can testify that you don't know $hit about AIKIDO. You can't even spell AIKIDO correctly! BUT! I'm a big fan of Bas too! ;)
Isn't the spelling phonetic since it isn't english?

I didn't know you taught Aikido. Do you still teach? Where at? I really hope to start some training in a few months, and I know you'd love to throw me around a bit.

Bas is a very funny man and an excellent fighter. Been retired for a while now, but still trains and commentates for live events and I believe he's a co host on an MMA show now as well.

As far as my spelling of aikido, my mistake. I didn't properly spell check. As for my knowledge, their is no way for me to definitively prove that over the interwebs, though it has been 10+ since I was last involved with the sport. I have no desire to start a ******* contest, just have a good laugh at Bas and enjoy.

I went on the internet and found a place in Bellevue called Krav Maga Eastside Training Center. I will check them out as far as classes and cost. If anyone has been there and knows anything about them I would appreciate the information. Thanks!

Highly recommended. Chris, Doug, and Nick are awesome guys and will get you going with self-defense. Work has been eating me alive, else I would be there three times a week :). If you do go, send me a message and I'll try to make it.

If you're not in shape, you will be by the time you're going regularly. Warmups will kick your ass, and that's before the fighting starts ;)

Hi Tawnos, See my post on 8/11. I did go and posted about it. And you are right, the warm up did kick my butt! And that's after working out at the gym on the weight machines for a year! Then we got into the real work, punching and kicking. I am still sore today, especially arms and quads. Obviously working with weight machines isn't giving me the muscle tone I need! LOL I liked it though and want to continue as soon as I can afford it. BTW, the moves shown in the first video in the first post on this thread are ADVANCED moves; they don't teach you those until you are proficient in the basic stuff. I have a free training session with the personal trainer at my gym today so I imagine my butt will get kicked again!

Also meant to mention that Krav Maga is simple, but it's not easy. There is a definite difference between those two. It reminds me of Tai Chi in a way; years ago I took it for about a year. If you think about it very much, you can't do it. You learn by watching and imitating the instructor. I did get to the point with Tai Chi to where it became a "flow" of movement and I didn't think about it as I was practicing it. It became muscle or body memory. You don't think about it, you just do it. I think Krav will probably be very similar.

When they say injured though, it's mostly bruises and bumps:

That was after a night of knife defense with Nick. I'm really hoping to get back to going there all the time, but since classes are at specific times and so is work, I've been a bit pressed for time :(

That looks like a pretty nasty bruise. Bruises and bumps I can take, heck that's part of normal everyday life. Just can't be seriously injured. Had my training session with the trainer, it went pretty well and he said I was in pretty good shape. My body has adapted to the weight machines though and I will be adding other things. I really want to start Krav Maga, it's just a money thing right now. I like the idea of eventually being able to disarm someone who sticks a knife or gun in my face, instead of getting shot or stabbed. I don't care how situationally aware you are, life happens and things happen that surprise you. Even if you see it coming, you may not be able to draw your firearm in time. Plus the benefit of all that exercise!

Bas was always one of my favorite fighters...a real gentleman who never took himself too seriously. I forgive you for your poor spelling! LOL! :p

Joe, I taught at the school of Aikibudo in Belgrade, Serbia. You're too big for me to be throwing around BTW! LOL!

"The money thing"

Yeah, that's MY problem.

I'm retired, and watching my fixed income shrink month by month, even though my government keeps assuring me there is no inflation... they need to tell it to the Electric, Gas, and Water companies, the garbage men, the grocery store, and the guys that replaced our air-conditioner and water heater!

I had to get a part-time security job to make ends meet, then negotiate with the Irish-cherokee (a BAD combination to piss off!) wife for a "Share" to upgrade from my .45 LC Uberti replica Winchester 1873 lever action rifle, to the new DPMS Carbine in .308 caliber.

I really need a hand-to-hand option, now that I'm white haired, with a face like a bronzed roadmap, and working with the public in less than savory neighborhoods. I can't shoot everyone who verbally threatens me, or who makes threatening physical movements that are not quite attacks... I'd have a higher body count than all of Clint Eastwood's characters combined!

I really NEED a non-lethal option... but lack the funds to pay for it. I'm checking locally for low cost alternatives, and will let you know what I find. At age 63, I don't have 20 years to invest in learning the traditional styles of hand-to-hand... and even if I did have the cash, there are no Krav Maga schools in under a hundered miles of Louisville KY that I can find.

This is a Russian approximation art. Good point though -- Aikido is one of the few arts that can be done at full speed without breaking joints provided you know your opponent's body style well enough.

I'm 63 also and am open to learning all sorts of things. I have no idea how long I will live but I plan on learning as long as I am still here. Krav Maga doesn't take 20 years to learn and be able to use effectively. Just learning a few simple movements in any of the martial arts would be helpful I would think. You are only old if you think you are! You might want to think about a taser (I've heard they're expensive), stun gun or kuboton. Some pepper sprays are also effective. Besides my .45 I also carry pepper spray for non-lethal encounters. I'm sure you will find a solution if you keep looking and keep an open mind.
