letter from the Governor

Well, Gov. Ted Strickland wrote me back yesterday (even signed it himself - not a form letter), saying that he "shared my concern" that the Ohio gun transportation laws were in need of fixing, but that he knew of no pending legislation before the statehouse. This might be a good opportunity to appeal to our Ohio membership to write their respective representatives/state senators and see if we can remedy this unfortunate situation.

OFCC is working on that during this session. We are trying get loaded open carry in a vehicle without a license to be legalized, and also have the definition of a loaded weapon clarified to having one in the tube. I don't know if you're a member of OFCC, but it would be a great group to join. I've only been a member fora little while, but I've been watching the organization for a while, and they are agood groupto volunteer with and give some of your free time to fight for our gun rights.

I'm not a member as yet, but I do seem to be the "test case" for the time being... I'll be sure to enter the Gov's letter as an exhibit at trial if it comes to that. Never underestimate the power of namedropping.

How do Ohioans feel about Strickland vs. Taft, regarding gun rights?

Taft was/is an asshole on all counts, whatever his veiws on guns. Our man Ted is a pro-gun Democrat.

Glad to hear that you have someone better in office than Taft. I didn't like anything I read about him, and I'm not even from Ohio. We need a pro-gun Dem or a non anti-gun RINO in my state, pronto.

The Guv could have, and should have indicated that he would suggest such a change to the laws. Anyone can say that they "share your concern" - big frickin deal!

Being proactive about getting a fix is quite a different thing.

If Legba would post the letter in PDF form or however Legba chose to make the letter available to the OC and CC groups, then each one of us Ohio citizens could write a letter to Gov. Strickland suggesting that he become proactive and resolve this mess. Or have opencarry.org and Buckeye Firearms Assoc. coordinate a writing campaign for both groups. Power is in numbers. Many letters can get action. The letter also should be sent to each of our State representatives.

Strickland’s “I feel your Pain” letter is just the letter that needs a major response by us all.

Only a suggestion.

Well, in fairness to the governor, he's not a legislator and can only approve or veto proposed legislation. A more direct route for action would be direct communication with the statehouse(s) membership. I think Strickland would back any effort at rendering the transporation laws less ambiguous.

Part of the legal problem I'm up against now is that appellate courts here have ruled that complying with 2923.16 ORC (improper transport) is not an affirmative defense to 2923.12 (carrying concealed weapons) as far as handguns are concerned. As it stands, transporting a handgun in a case renders it "concealed."They have applied the "in a case" clause only to long guns, even though the law specifies "firearms" which certainly ought to include handguns. Patent bullshit, I agree, but that how the courts have ruled. So - the courts are part of the problem in this case, and it will require more clearly written laws to remove this bullshit ambiguity.

Legislatively, you are right - but in the real world, he can let members of the House/Senate know that he sure would like to have a bill that backs up his "I feel your pain" note.

Certainly, he and other governors have done this with other matters - you agree?

Sure, he presumably has some pull as far as that goes, but it still devolves to some legislator to draft a particular bill, get it through committee, etc. We'll see. Failing that, I can always apply for clemency if this goes badly. ;-/

Right now there so much media attention involving criminals with guns , Now is the time to focus on keeping the need to be armed in the forefront...........We have criminals, terrorists, and the war on drugs keeping the LEO's tapped out and the American ppl should have unfettered resources to protect themselves ...........

With college students becoming involved in protests this will drive the mainstream media to pay attention.Dropping the ball now will make it alot harder later......

I read somewhere on one of the anti's sites ......"If you see someone with a gun call the police, you don't know if they are good or bad"....................Hell, I agree........This will condition those that call and also the LEOs that respond..............Very seldom will you see a criminal with a gun until he uses it......................Lets help further their agenda..............Call the police, let their battle cry work for us..............Media attention and the carrying of firearms becoming the in thing will solve our problems...Once mainstream media latches on that the ppl want it we will have it our way...................We need to influence those with buying power........

In reality ..................This is a perception problem , Only education and mass attentionwill help...........................

Just because they are in a police uniform or you see a badge, premise 1 still applies...You do not know if they are good or bad.
