More BS.

Neighbours in Cairns may face charges after restraining a man in a domestic dispute who later died in hospital.

POLICE have not ruled out charging four men who intervened in a domestic dispute, restraining a man who later died in hospital.

An internal police probe is also under way as the 38-year-old's death is being considered a death in custody.

The deceased man was held down by residents outside his Cairns home as they attempted to intervene when he allegedly attacked two women on Saturday night.

Police officers tried to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead in Cairns Base Hospital.

A male neighbour, who asked not to be named, said yesterday his wife watched the events from their driveway about 100m away.

He said his wife saw a woman and two young children leave the house followed by the man, thought to be her partner, who was yelling at her.

A male neighbour then intervened and tried to restrain the man before three other men went to his aid.

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she was shocked by the incident as the street was normally "very quiet".

Far North police Det Insp Bruno Asnicar said police could not rule out charges.

"It's an investigation," he said. "There're always *possible charges as a result of an investigation."

"It's just so early in the investigation that certainly no decisions have been made about any charges at this point.

"We've had a large number of people assisting us on the night and that was very encouraging."

So much for the safest city in Australia.

Random crimes from today, haven't seen any shootings, just firearms being used in robberies. But the night is still young.

Train station assaults and thefts up despite PSOs Armed station guards who patrol train stations in Melbourne.

Detectives from the Darebin Criminal Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a milk bar in Thornbury today.

$1.5 million of cannabis seized near Coffs Harbour. Very common.

Men storm hotel with firearms and knives - Kingsgrove.

Man in serious condition following an aggravated break and enter, near Kempsey. In other words a home invasion.

52-year-old woman knocked unconscious during robbery - Rosemeadow.

Arsonists torch playground.

18-year-old to stand trial for murder, two counts of attempted murder.

Perth man Bradley Auckram to be jailed for shooting stepson.

The suicide rate must have soared.

It varies state to state. Queensland is the worst, it usually takes months to get a license there. They think of it a cooling period off I guess. The thing is, if one is intent to kill someone else they won't be waiting for a gun license.

Hey, can you guys get 80% lower receivers down under? And then get completed uppers?

I'm not positive but I think so. I assume the Third Reich has to sign off on it though.

Statistics show you're more than 3 times more likely than to get shot in South Australia than in New South Wales, which is in the middle of a gang war. I don't follow the news from other states, apart from the odd story from Sydney. Lot of shootings happening for a supposedly gun crime free country.

Sorry to hear a once great and "free" country has fallen so far in respect to allowing citizens the right of self protection. You're always welcome here in AZ mate! :) Our laws value the freedom to use the best tools available to defend ones life...firearms.

ETA - our laws (Constitutional carry) allow any law-abiding person (non U.S. persons too) to carry a firearm for protection.

It must be nice. Sadly, I can't remember a time when it was great here. I was young when the firearms laws changed so I missed it all. Now I just have to listen to stories of the old days when semi-automatic rifles did not require a special license, no mag restrictions, genuine reasons or 28 day waiting periods. Hell, you could have a gatling gun if you wanted.

Thanks for the offer. I may very well visit sometime. It would be quite an experience to carry a gun for self-defense. We can't even carry OC spray here.

Maybe if she had the means to defend herself the outcome would have been different.

Woman brutally murdered in Brisbane CBD

Police believe a shirtless man seen in Brisbane’s CBD may be linked to the bashing murder of a young woman whose body was found in a city park on Sunday morning.

Eunji Ban, a 23-year-old Korean national who worked as a cleaner, was found with severe head injuries in Wickham Park, off Albert Street, in the CBD about 4.30am on Sunday.

Ms Ban arrived in Australia just six weeks ago as part of a youth exchange program.

Detectives are yet to determine a motive for the killing because there is no evidence to suggest she was sexually assaulted or robbed.

I'll go ahead and 2nd (pun:)) what FreeInAZ said. If you're ever wishing to get away and come to the states, AZ welcomes you with Open Arms:

I'm in the southern (more left-leaning) part of AZ, but even then it's still pretty good. A visit from you might even start talk of an OC dinner in the area.:)

Back from holidays, thanks to all. :) If I get the chance to go to AZ I definitely will let you know.

davidmcbeth, they arrested someone for the murder, not much comfort for the family, though.

If everything was so safe things like this wouldn't happen daily:

Queensland police seize 328 firearms after property raided.

Three men have been charged after more than 300 guns and four tonnes of ammunition were seized in central Queensland.

On Monday, police raided a property at Moonford, near Monto, and found a huge cache of military style weapons and handguns.

“This is certainly one of the largest hauls of firearms, ammunition and weapons we have uncovered,” Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker said.

“This is a very significant result for us and we thank our policing partners and the assistance provided by the agencies who have assisted us with this operation."

The search was carried out by detectives from the Drug and Serious Crime Group's Firearms Investigation Team along with detectives from the Central Region.

Representatives and investigators from the Australian Federal Police and Queensland Police Service Operations Support Command, Stock and Rural Crime Investigation Squad and Wide Bay Burnett policing district provided assistance in searching the property and identifying and categorising the seized firearms.

Three local men aged 42, 46 and 69 were charged with one count of unlawfully possessing more than 10 weapons including Category C, D and R weapons.

The men, believed to be a father and his two sons, are expected to appear in the Biloela Magistrates Court on December 18.

Investigations are ongoing with the assistance of the Australian Crime Commission, Customs and Border Protection and AFP

This was an interesting one. Goes to show that 'restricted' firearms are still out there. For those that don't know, Category C are semi-automatic rimfire rifles and shotguns, Category D is semi-automatic centerfire. Both are legal but require the necessary licenses. R means restricted (fully automatic etc.)

Good thread.

Is it required to have a license for home defense weapons, firearms? (never leave the house).

If so, do they have a way of checking?

If no way to check then maybe BGs are robbing houses to get (illegal?) guns.

How do -you- think the BGs are getting guns, shotguns?

Are the police in OZ armed? With what? Handguns, shotguns only?

Do you have SWAT teams? Warrent-less intrusions?

I have some good friends in OZ who do claim gun control works, so trying to understand.

----

I have to say 800 for the whole country for murders by firearm is 800/25,000,000 - that's 0.000032 or 0.0032% <---extremely small. Of course firearms used in commission of a felony would be a better number to look at.

TIA

You need a license to own any firearm (including air rifles). In my state it takes around 3 to 5 weeks to get a license. Shotguns and rifles are pretty easy to get, handguns are a lot harder.

Self-defense with a firearm is a very grey area here. If you were to shoot an intruder you would be in months to years of legal hell. They expect us to call the police.

Checking that you have a license or if it leaves the home? You have to show your license and pre-order which gun you want at the gun shop. You can't just go in and walk out with one the same day. It takes 28 days usually. Sometimes it can be less but I wouldn't bank on it. When you first get a gun license the police will come and inspect your safe to make sure it's up to standard. If not, application denied. They usually check on people every 5 years or so but I've heard of many people who have never been checked.

The New South Wales firearms registry was recently leaked, which is why gun owners are being home invaded for their firearms.

All police in Australia are armed with handguns, typically Glocks or S&W's. They can usually choose which they'd prefer. Detectives can carry shotguns for operations if they feel it's necessary. I've heard of patrol officers carrying shotguns in some areas but it's not common. Police in Queensland want to start carrying fully-automatic rifles in their cars and at home.

We have tactical teams, same thing. There are different types, though. You have the typical American-looking SWAT guys, then you have response units who carry semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and sidearms.

Regular officers aren't expected to deal with offenders with guns, or even knives in some cases unless they have no other option. That's why police murders are somewhat rare. Some years we might not have any police murdered. The catch with that is, if you die from a past injury that you received then you likely won't be counted as a police death. Friend of a friend died from complications after having his throat cut years ago; not counted on the memorial board.

Where do your friends live? My city is nice but there are a lot of places I wouldn't go.

I don't think there are 800 firearm murders, probably around 300 to 400. It might not sound like many but when you consider we only have 23 million people, a lot less illegal guns, different culture etc. it is.

For instance, Japan, with over 126 million people, only has around 400 or so murders a year. That's if you believe the statistics, that is. I do believe that their cultural differences have greatly benefited them. Australia has a major societal problem which a lot of developed nations don't have. Another reason is that we don't have the gang culture that the U.S. has. If we had a population of 300 million it would be a different story and everything would probably resemble Mad Max. Regardless, we still have a lot of firearm crime. Shootings are a daily occurrence. So are armed robberies, rapes, armed robberies and so on.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Update from my state: A MAN has been charged after he allegedly fired shots at police during a two-hour siege on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

Seems to be working well for everyone. :uhoh:

A man has been arrested after three people were stabbed at a mosque in Dallas (Melbourne) this morning.

Police were called to an altercation involving four people at the property on King Street shortly before 11am.

Three men were stabbed during the incident and one of those men has since died. One man is in a critical condition and one is in a stable condition, and both have been conveyed to hospital.

The Critical Incident Response Team attended and arrested the fourth man.

The Homicide Squad is currently en route to the scene.

Apparently the man was 'agitated'.
