I'm finished cleaning and oiling my PT745. I've got the day off from work so I take my time to gather my ammunition and head to a new shooting range. I bring both my Hi Point .40SW and my Taurus Millennium Pro .45 (latest generation)
When I walk in, I'm Open Carrying (of course) and the clerk is interested in my firearm. We exchange kind words about the Taurus and I head into the range for the first time. I like it- it's okay!- it's called The Silver Bullet (Denver).
I set up and fire my PT745 first. All goes well through 5 or 6 clips. Uh Oh. Trouble... my clip is failing to secure inside the pistol. The magazine release is not jammed. The action on the release functions well enough.
Crap... I just paid for an hour of BANG BANG and here I am with a pistol failure above and beyond a tap and rack.
Taking advantage of the PT745's Quick Take Down pin- I had the slide off to further examine the inside of the grip. I found that the catch on the magazine release has completely rounded out. Made of metal- the shiny round polished ghost of a mag catch caught my eye as I lifted the frame to the fluorescence. ****.. I'm screwed on this one.
A wave of disappointment rushed over me. I felt like the people behind me were staring at me the whole time as I fiddled with my pistol... Hadn't fired a round in 10 minutes. I assembled my pistol and rushed to my Hi Point. I had earlier just opened the magazine lips for the first time. This was going to assure that I could fully load my magazine without a FTF on my second round.
Well.. even a little more embarrassment here but not to bad.. Had 20 minutes left.. My HI Point was able to fire through the first 6 rounds flawlessly every time. Somewhere in the middle of the clip, though, there would be another jam. Bullets getting jammed in the chamber- looks like I need to Tighten the lips just a little bit. I decided not to get into it at the time and just finish my time.. One jam after another. Most likely never got through a whole mag without that jam.
Okay so first thing is first... I'm hurting. I just realized my daily carry piece is down and out for the count. It's going back to Taurus. But wait.. would it be possible this shooting range/gun store may have a replacement piece? I paid for my time and asked- they didn't. I was bummed. Could I reverse my ambidextrous mag release to at least make it work for now? Hmm.. I took down the pistol again in the waiting room for the range. I did a quick reverse after looking up directions online on my cell phone. Did Not solve my problem- at all. The mag was able to catch but the TINIEST smallest slightest bump and the mag fell right out. As if it only worked if it was cocked at an angle and fell out easily.
Okay I can't carry the Hi Point.. Not without a mag lip adjustment and not anyway because my .40 is half my body weight. I said **** it and committed my last few dollars in my pocket to a new pistol.
I said, this time, I wouldn't buy used like I had with the Taurus. I said this time I would buy something new. I was sending the Taurus back to the Miami repair shop and thus getting my Taurus back. I had $300 to spend so I went to my favorite gun shop.. I drove to G&G Guns (Denver). After waiting for Warren to draw his attention my way- I pleaded with him about my situation. He had no replacement part either but did recommend a guy in town that would work on it for me. Well I knew then I had to get a new piece so we were able to handle a few pistols and chat about my replacement and what it should be. I Suggested a pocket pistol as so it could be my Backup Gun (BUG) when I get my .45 back. I asked about those LCP and KelTec 380s. I found the 9mm Kel Tec PF 9 sitting in the same case. New. We were able to make a deal on a price.
I drove home, first, to do my research.. Read all about the PF 9... Returned with $300.
I have a new PF 9; blued finish- hydra shock 9 hollow points-
I carry fully loaded- no external safety but the trigger is a long pull and is double action only.
More on the PF 9 after I'm able to shoot my first 50 or 100 rounds.
