An initiative petition to ban assault-style weapons would require gun owners to dispose of certain legally obtained semiautomatic firearms within 120 days of when the law takes effect Jan. 1, assuming the measure makes it on the ballot and is approved by voters.

Roling on the floor...you are honestly worried about this initiative which states in part, according to your cite:

Members of the military, law enforcement and government would be exempt from the ban but would be required to register their weapons with Oregon State Police.

ya like this body of privilege members is going to register their prized & precious assault long guns.

Let the games begin on campaigning on this initiative and watch the $$$$$ flow.

The law will be found unconstitutional, if passed. On the other hand the Oregon supreme court said you can ONLY posses a loaded handgun in your home.

assault weapons

I don't get it. When did automatic weapons of any kind become legal? When I was in the marine Corps 1970, owning an automatic weapon was illegal. There is only one purpose for an assault weapon and that is to assault and kill your enemy. In close combat your grateful to have that weapon. But dear hunting, being over run by a heard of them, and you want to get as many as you can. Last I heard you only get one for the season. Target practice, you would need a lot of targets. Why would anyone need to own and automatic weapon? I have several weapons, but no automatic weapons like the nut job that took out so many from the hotel in Las Vegas, or the rabid pair in San Bernardino. It was told to me by the Marine Drill instructors while in boot camp. I remember back then, after firing a 50cal water cooled machine gun. What a rush, but thought this is only good for killing other human beings. So I'm not criticizing anyone for their beliefs, that's what this country was built on, freedom of speech.

You need to stop eating so many crayons, they're making you an idiot.
1) Automatic weapons are legal, although they are highly regulated since about 1934. Currently automatic weapons are legal in 38 states.
2) The rifles used by Stephen Paddock wasn't full. auto.
3) The rifles used by Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik weren't full auto.
4) The .50 cal Browning isn't water cooled.

There is so much erroneous with your post. I will try to respond to each point, but suggest that your verify.

Automatic guns (machine guns) were not illegal in 1970. They are not illegal today. See Fire Arms Owners Protection Act.

"Assault weapons" is a matter of form, not function. The difference between an evil black rifle and a stock semi-automatic AR is primarily in mind set/attitude.

The type of guns we own is not a matter of need but more likely what we want and can afford.

Hunting/bag limits are set by the individual states - frequently more than one per season.

Semi-automatic rifles similar to the semi-automatic AR-15 have been used in high-profile and deadly mass shootings over the years in Aurora, Colo.; Roseburg, Ore.; San Bernadino, Calif.; Newtown, Conn.; Orlando; and in 2017, Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Texas.
None of the guns were full automatic/machine guns.

There is always somebody calling somebody names. Not an Idiot, just old. I told it just like I remember it, and believed it or I wouldn't have posted it. I stand corrected about my not so factual facts. But I still don't understand why, unless you were in combat why you would need much less want an automatic weapon. Their only purpose is to kill human beings. Now semi auto I see not problem with those. But neither of it matters when there is no discussion, As I am just an idiot of an old man. Thanks for you incite and explanation Grapeshot

I don't get it. When did automatic weapons of any kind become legal? ...

When will you get your information from a source other than Hollywood and the main stream media?

The fact is they are legal in most states, including yours.

Its not so much of a personal insult. People get frustrated when unsubstantiated posts are made.
Granted that they should stick to replying/responding to the data, not the person.
